what was the scam?
how much did you lose?
did you prosecute?
were you ashamed?
what were the reactions of those who knew?

[everyone knows my story, i'm interested in others.]

I don't know your story.

Closest I got is giving some chick ten bucks to buy booze for me and atmas when we were maybe eighteen and she just walked off with it.

Never fell for a confidence scam but, I had a law firm in NY take 10,000+ out of my bank account once. I had to pay to hire a lawyer and take them to court, pay to fly to NY(as I dont live there) to appear in court to dispute them. It wasnt pleasant.

if you claim fraud here you can be compensated for expenses but i don't know if that includes travel, attorney, or what

They eventually replaced the money, and I was awarded my attorney fees but not my travel expenses.

Something similar happened to me in my early twenties. I gave this European girl who kept hanging around my then workplace ten bucks because she needed to get tampons and she keep needling me and pleading me and pressuring me for it, saying she was going to pay me back. Like, for ten or fifteen minutes.

She knew what she was doing because she had that suntanned ass and titties out with the bikini lines and that thick accent and them curly ringlets of hair and twinkly blue eyes working the maybe-you-might-get-some-ass-if-you-be-nice-to-me shill and I knew deep down inside I wasn't going to see that Hamilton again, but you can't tell a twenty-year old not to learn how to be a sucker. Gotta learn the hard way, yo. :D

I wonder what ever happened to that gal. Ah, life...

i got taken for about 25k.
happy!?

now then, i want to know about real scams.
rubber checks, the pigeon drop (or anything with a cool name).

shame is a big part of this, so although you should get over it, if you can't or haven't yet, pm me.

Dude, that sucks.

I think Flirt got scammed by someone on here, but I'm not absolutely sure though.

Not a chance...

I'm an optimist. I'm extremely trusting. I believe humanity is born good and serial killers are a product of their environment. I believe that the world is getting better and better...

But, I'm not stupid. Although I have one of those stories of youthful ignorance too, as in giving someone money and expecting them to come back with a bag of pot...

When I was living in Ardmore, PA, some obviously unsavory chick knocked on my door and asked me to lend her some money for a bus...some sob story about her sick kid and a hospital. I knew it was utter bullshit, but whatayagonnado? I gave her five bucks and told her to stay safe.

Ouch. Fuck, that sucks. Will you tell us how the scam worked?

And as an aside to Zumi: I bought someone a box of tampons too, actually not very long ago. I still haven't seen the money, and those suckers are a lot more expensive now.

Every time I see her I think "Bitch, I hope she's bleeding like a stuck pig" :D

Does Amway count? I was in it for about six months before bowing out. I lost about $350 buying no-name products for about twice the money found elsewhere.

That, and others were getting pissed off hearing the sales pitch to join.

How?

Years ago--but way after I was not only old enough but also educated enough in the field to know better--I fell for the White Van Speaker Scam. I paid some very low amount compared to most, apparently, but as I understand it, the speakers cost the shady guy at the top of the scam about $15 each. which put me at more than ten times the value.

I figured, even if they don't work well, I can take them apart and use the parts. Opened them, saw shit, closed them back up and eventually sold them at a garage sale. After I saw the shit, I Internetted the name of the speakers (no idea if Google was even up and running then!) and found out I'd been scammed, but that my lowball offer put me in the lucky few who didn't lose much.

ETA: Also pissed and humbled to find out I'd been profiled: I fit the mold of the target of this scam exactly. Young, male, nice neighborhood, walking alone (women don't let guys buy stupid shit while they're with them), not far from an ATM, etc.

I didn't get taken, but I was approached.

I sold a car on Craigslist. It was 12 years old and the air conditioning didn't work. The ad made all the problem very clear and I wasn't asking much. I just wanted it gone. It sold in a few days, but I got an email from someone asking about the car. The email said it was to be a "surprise for my uncle."

That is a standard line in Craigslist scams. A person in another city wants to buy your car. They have friend or business associate in town, who conveniently owes them several thousand dollars. The friend has a cashier's check for a couple grand over the price of the car. This is why they go for low priced cars. The seller deposits the check and gives the friend the difference. The friend knows a friendly notary who will take care of the title transfer.

A few weeks later, the bank discovers the check has been altered. It was issued for $200 and was deposited for $3200.

The beauty of this scam is there is no way to recover the car. The new owner has clear title and the financial dispute is between you and some guy who no one can find.
