What is the maximum ethical expenditure to extend a pet's life?

Roughly 100-200% more than most people would be willing to donate to help other human beings.

I grew up on a farm where we weighed the cost of a vet bill/animal suffering with the cost of a .45 round.

If you have to spend and that's what you want to spend it on....limitless.

Exactly. At the time I had the really sick pet, I'd ask myself "do I want to spend the money on x or would I rather have my pet be taken care of at the vet?" In every case when I asked myself that question, the pet won over all other items I could have spent the money on. My answer was that I always wanted the pet more than anything else so I spent accordingly.

when extending the pet's life means it's more about your own feelings than the animal's quality of life, then you're spending too much.

Actually, I think this is a good answer. Even if you have the money to spend, it may not be the right answer to spend it.
