I know it's been hashed over many times, but I have a question pertaining to story cats. My latest submission was filed under non-con, but I'm wondering if it should have been BDSM. Being that I rarely venture into these categories, I was wondering if I could get some insight into the difference when it comes to readers of Lit.
My story, Liquid Bullets, was about a man taken hostage by a cadre of women and forced to submit sexually to each of them. I figured that was a lock for non-con. I wrote a second chapter in which he got some semblance of revenge, but the story began to drift more toward BDSM.
Is it as cut and dry as whether both parties are willing, to qualify for BDSM? Liquid Bullets, and the second chapter, is in my signature if anyone wants to take a look.
Thanks

No website with thousands and thousands of individual readers is going to have any semblance of hard-edged rules of what should be posted where (except for ones provided by the site's selection editor herself). Just take your best stab at it and don't worry about pleasing everyone. That' ain't agonna happen.

Another point is that all chapters do not have to be in the category. Call each chapter as it feels right.

That's pretty much what defines BDSM in current parlance, yeah.

Although there are plenty of BDSM fantasies that include forced abduction and such, there has to be a point of consent.

Non-con as a fetish is the constant reiteration of how how the victim really doesn't want to-- all about being a victim.

I'm with Stella on this one.

The first chapter you describe sounds like a gang rape and would go in NC & R. At the same time, if he is chained on the bed and the women get off on their domination of him, it could go in BDSM.

BDSM does not have to be mutually consensual. I have written stories about women who have been abducted and abused and a story where the woman takes revenge on the man be whipping him and fucking him with her strapon. There is no consent in any of those stories, but they got by. Perhaps they would not be acceptable now.

Maybe I'm just paranoid because of my misplacement pf previous stories. I thought I wrote a mature story, but apparently the characters weren't old enough.

It depends upon the context of the story. I've posted stories to Mature with characters as young as 35, but the other character was 18. Age difference stories have a different dynamic than stories with two mature characters.

Not sure if that may be what caused the category switch in your case, but it's one possibility.

It was a story about two middle aged people, still trying to live the rambunctious days of their youth, running into each other at a meet market type of party. It got a few reads and one commented that it should have been in EC. DOM vs. Thundercat.

I think I've only posted stories to the Mature category where both (or more) are middle-aged or older. "Mature" doesn't really hit me as meaning anything like May-December context. (Yeah, I know that's what other writers use the category here for, but these are really two different concepts, in my mind.)

The description line for the category is "May / December lust & love affairs" but your concept is just as valid because of the category name ( just less popular )

Yes, I know that's the category name--so, right, it's quite OK to post May-December there if someone wants. (I think I've posted a cougar one or two there under that understanding). It's just one of a few categories here I think isn't well described by the website.
