Utah Republicans pass law banning all sex ed in schools

The GOP gets more out of touch every day. The attack on women and contraception carries on...

Most parents hope that teens will hold off on having sex, so most would agree that, when it comes to sex education, encouraging abstinence is important. But lawmakers in Utah have taken the ideal to the extreme, passing a bill this week that would make it illegal to talk about premarital sex, sexuality in general, homosexuality, and contraception, even in terms of preventing sexually transmitted diseases -- and even if a student asks a specific question about any of those topics. ....

State Senator Pat Jones, a Democrat, called the bill "a mandate against reality" and pointed out that in Utah, students do not automatically take sex ed classes -- parents who want their kids enrolled must opt in to the programs. But with this new mandate, school districts could eliminate the class entirely; those that do decide to offer a sex ed class will be required by law to only talk about abstinence.

Abstinance Only education worked really good for Bristol Palin.

It has been noted that students who receive abstinance only education are far more likely to end up pregnant or have STD's than those who have comprehensive sex-ed

Hmm, so sexual ignorance leads to bad sexual choices? Republicans say no, ignorance leads to better decisions. And don't mind the research that says that accurate sex ed is far more effective in preventing STIs and pregnancy than abstinence-only education. Research is for dummies and facts can be ignored in the face of right-wing ideology...

Hey, ideology isn't about facts, it's about being convinced about being right regardless what some 'so-called' facts are.

And as I've noted before, governing based on ideology instead of reality worked really, really good for the USSR.

The Catholics don't teach sex in in their schools and they are predominately democrats.

Of course Catholic schools teach sex ed. There's absolutely nothing in Catholic doctrine that says it should not be taught and they regularly teach it.

Mormons get enough sex education in the home.

Just ask anyone in FLDS.:rose:

FLDS aren't Mormons. Having lived in UT in my school years, I can tell you its definitely lacking in information. We had a quick section on it in our health class when i went, & was taught by a teacher who was a year away from retiring. He wouldnt answer any questions, other than to say "Ask your parents". What's really sad is that the state flooded the Governor & the House with petitions wanting them not to pass it, but they chose to ignore the people....as usual.

Of course, no one on the other side of the discussion sees the hypocrisy of their alligator tears.

How dare Republicans force their values on the schools! How dare the Republicans assume that the role of parenting should be left to the parents and not the schools (and as I understand it, there's not a lot of welfare ghetto in the state thanks to a firm moral underpinning in its residents), no, we want them to conform to our values and our vision of parenting or they are simply evil people.

If they want some sex education, all they have to do is watch network TV at eight o'clock because the East Coast assumes all children go to bed at 9PM Eastern...

So they give our kids a good, healthy dose of adult entertainment after their kids go to bed, which btw, is why we stopped watching network tv. Does that make us bad people for rejecting your values?

Well, vote them out.

That's where the will of the people is actually expressed.

If science is properly taught, then there is little need for sex-education.

The little bright-eyes are bombarded with it through the medium of popular culture along with the oh-so responsible message of, boys, girls, we know you are sluts, we know you cannot control yourselves, we know you are going to have sex, abstinence is simply impossible (and if you try it and fail, boy are we ever going to come down on you with the full force of our invective and ridicule for your way of life) and we won't punish you with a new life; we will do everything we can to turn you into a murderer in order to ensure that sex is a right of passage for you.

Utah Republicans didn't reject values, they rejected reality. Like the link said, kids in Utah didn't even get sex ed unless their parents specifically took the initiative to go out and sign their kid up for it.

Now Utah is left with schools that can't talk about sex. It just doesn't exist.

Now you are lying.

The law precludes wasting an entire year on one class; not talking about it.

It's amazing that you would troll me for weeks upon end, chasing me and calling me a liar when you do it so smoothly, adroitly and seamlessly in order to make it look like your "opposition" is stupid...

Typical...

You see the word Republican...

Thirty-seven states require information on abstinence to be included in the sex education curriculum of public schools. Of those states, 26 require abstinence be stressed as the only sure-fire way of preventing pregnancy or infection with sexually transmitted diseases, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

The Wisconsin state Assembly is expected to vote next week on a measure to emphasize abstinence in sex education, which cleared the state Senate in November.

Guttmacher said some states lack a statewide policy on sex education, leaving choices about reproductive-health curriculum entirely up to the local level. Under Utah's newly passed legislation, public school districts could offer an abstinence-only curriculum or no sex education at all.

No one had to take the class, yet somehow dropping it will lead to sexual Armageddon...

Democratic lawmakers opposed to the bill argued that not all parents can be expected to adequately inform their children about birth control and reproductive health. They said curtailing sex education in schools would lead to an increase in teenage pregnancies and the spread of sexually-transmitted diseases.

If some parents fail, then all parents lose their rights when altruism is the clarion call to social crusade.

Huh? How am I lying? The link says the law tells schools they have two options:

1) Don't teach sex ed anymore.

2) Teach some kind of abstinence-only class. "Human sexuality instruction or instructional programs may not include instruction in, or the advocacy of, the intricacies of intercourse, sexual stimulation, or erotic behavior; homosexuality; the use of contraceptive methods or devices; or sexual activity outside of marriage," reads the bill, HB 363.

You're still an idiot.

No you're wrong and you're putting words into my mouth.

I 100% agree that sex ed should include the message that abstinence is the only sure-fire way to avoid STIs and pregnancy. And I believe in that message because I believe in giving kids factual information. When I worked in a social health agency during my undergrad internship I taught sex ed and proudly delivered this very message myself.

However this has nothing at all to do with what happened in Utah.

Stop your boring old victim act. Not one parent is losing their rights. Like the link says (not that you read it) that kids in Utah don't automatically take sex ed class. Parents have to opt into these classes.

It does not even occur to you that in the new normative economy that an elective class might be cancelled to make sure there is money and room for things like science...

Quit trivializing in order to isolate and ridicule.

And please, please, please for you own sake, quit lying to people.

1) You keep accusing me of lying here while not actually saying what I'm lying about. You're a coward.

2) Sex Ed isn't an elective class so your entire argument is rubbish. It's a class that's taught for just a couple hours per year. No school has a full-time sex ed class.

Besides, which middle school offers its kids electives?

By the way, I will not accuse you of lying about sex ed being an elective. You apparently didn't know what an elective was.

OKAY! How exactly has sex ed helped society? It employs lotsa people but what else has it accomplished?
