While we're excited that Apple's decided to expand its operations in the United States, it's very difficult not to be cynical about the details. Governor Rick Perry announced on Friday that he's giving $21 million over the next decade from the Texas Enterprise Fund to Apple, and (presumably in exchange) Apple will build a $302 million campus near Austin that will create 3,600. On a positive note, Apple's creating American jobs after all. Hooray! We thought they were exaggerating their record of job creation. But does the world's most valuable company really need a $21 million grant? Perry justified his decision in a press release: "Investments like this further Texas' potential to become the nation's next high-tech hub." After all, lots of other states would probably love to be home to the next Apple campus. And evidently, it takes money to make money jobs

A $5,800 a job subsidy?
And Gov. Perry claimed to be for "smaller" government.
The best part is Perry campaigned for president saying gays "are contrary to American values." Yet the CEO of Apple is gay.

I'd laugh at the irony if he was not doling out my money.

Republicans desire big government every bit as much as Democrats. The difference is that Republicans lie about it.

2.1 a year for a 302 million dollar project.

Not much in the way of real money. Seems like he beat the competition on the cheap.

Would you prefer Apple just move everything to China?

Fallacy of false dichotomy.

You're really terrible at logic Mr. Logic Cop.

And how many jobs will this create? We aren't talking about the bumblefuck federal government. If you can do simple math this is a no-brainer.

Corporate welfare.
Government picking winners and losers.
Let the free market determine where Apple goes.

(for those who haven't been fed their opinion yet this morning)

I thought they came in batches...

Or is that still a Sunday wind-up thing?

Haven't seen a newspaper since the night they drove ol' Dixie down...

If you see a free market, whistle it down and hold it for us...

;) ;)

And AJ flip-flops instantly whenever a Republican administration wants to swoop in and pick winners and losers. When Democrats are in charge that's NEVER the role of government. It goes against the very fabric of your being. You bristle at the very thought!

When Republicans are in charge though, that's DIFFERENT!

I do not understand the hate on this. The $21 million grant is incentive to keep American jobs from going overseas. Not only will it boost Austin, Tx work force by adding another 3,600 jobs, it leads to contracts which means jobs for other Americans.

I think the link is somewhat misleading to those unfamiliar with TEF. No doubt this will also be used to bolster that area's infrastructure, leading to even more jobs.

Since the creation of the Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) in 2003, it has invested $443.4 million. By 2011, it has resulted in more than 62,000 jobs and more than $15.4 billion in capital investment in the state of Texas.

Then again this is yet another excuse for the other US states to be jealous of an enterprising Texas. Apparently, providing jobs and keeping Apple in the US is not making some Americans happy either.

It's not about giving Apple money. It's about who is giving them money.

It's like when you legislate family values, then get caught tapping your toe under the stall in the Men's room at an airport.

And when we point out this dynamic regarding GM, well that's different. The government should never pick winners and losers.

Except in Apple in Texas.

Except oil companies.

Except pharmaceuticals.

Unless the Democrats are in power then no exceptions will be made.

Its what a governor should do.....at last Perry is trying to raise revenue besides dishing out higher taxes and bringing in a casino.....kudos for creativity

Watch them go after the high paying jobs for biotech as well, if he hasnt already....wish our Governer would be so proactive. Maryland is busy passing gay marriage bills...

You think more Americans would be upset if the money came from the Federal Government? You betcha!

Say what you want, but Maryland's unemployment rate never went above 8% and Virginia's peaked at 7.3%. Maryland and Virginia have been very successful in doing exactly what Texas is trying to do. Virginia lured the hi-tech interweb companies and Maryland lured the biotech industry.

Having the federal government here hasn't hurt either.

Howsabout Apple pay its way. Its GOP affirmative action for the 1%. FDR usta do the same. The gubmint built factories for the BIG companies then sold them to the BIG companies for pennies on the dolluh.

True that. And I firmly believe those 3 states' Governors and business leaders are doing exactly what they should, which is taking care of them and theirs. I do not care about the party affiliation, so long as they are generating employment for the unemployed.

Then lets build a Washington DC in every state! Put everyone to work unreeling red tape or spooling it.
