The SNAP/Food Stamp Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is pleased to be distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever.

Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S. Department of the Interior, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed The Animals." This is because the animals may grow dependent on handouts and not learn to take care of themselves.

Could someone please explain to non-Americans how the food stamp system works?
Our welfare is given out as money and discounts on utilities, so I don't understand what food stamps actually are.

Varies state by state, but basically you get a card, looks like a credit card, and every month the state loads x amount onto it, and you can use to to purchase food.

Is it only for food?
Or can you use it to say, buy alcohol?
And can you use it in all stores, or only certain ones?
How much value gets put on it?
Like I said, I haven't the faintest clue how that system works.

Is it only for food? yes
Or can you use it to say, buy alcohol? -no
And can you use it in all stores, or only certain ones? most stores accept the card now
How much value gets put on it? depends on your level of need and how many children you have

Things I wish you could buy with food stamps

1: Pet Food
2: Restaurant Food

They've talked about both these in the past, but I've never known it to happen.

In Ky, you have to be working 20 hours or more a week to get food stamps. Or have dependent children. Or be pregnant. Basically, the state will let adults starve but not children. I get about $150 a month, but I've known folk with kids to get around $500 or so.

Sounds like a much better system than we have.
Here, you can go blow your welfare money on whatever you want.
And a lot of people [apparently] do so.

That's not a lot to spend on food?
I have 2 kids at home, and spend about $130 a week on food.

Maybe, but I've seen folk sell their stamps for $.50 on the dollar for drug money.

How does that work?
Don't you have to sign or something, to prove it's you spending the credit?

People can trade the cards to someone and simply give them their pass code. *shrug* It happens. Before, when it was an actual piece of paper they would simply sell them. Im not sure if theres a way to prevent corruption completely.

Sometimes people will simply walk into the store with you and swipe it for you. I don't think there is a way to wipe out this kind of fraud the only question ultimately is for someone to do the math and find out if we're better off with these people in jail or not.

It's worth noting that while I'm completely against people who can't afford drugs using drugs but seriously as far as the grand scheme of things goes government gives Joe $200 dollars for groceries. He sells his $200 dollars worth of groceries for $120 (which is what I've heard is the average going price) the store still gets two hundred dollars. So jobs. That guy with the $120 in addition to his drugs and alcohol he's STILL gonna eat and if he doesn't he's gonna cease to be a drag on society after a few weeks anyway. It's one of those messy situations but we still don't really come out much worse off.

So it's not like one card is issued, and then gets topped up monthly.
You get a new card every month?

It's a state by state thing. Fifty states, fifty policies. In California it's one card that gets topped up. It doesn't stop me from walking through the store with your shopping list walking out and loading them into your trunk and walking away with your money.

Must be nice. I have money left over every month- it's not so much for food; it's to barely keep yourself alive. It's not supposed to buy all your food, it's supposed to help you buy food. But I can live on $150 a month easy, food-wise. But I don't buy meat, which is where most people spend all their food money.

I thought that EBT cards were all federal. I know nothing. *sigh*
But nah, you get one. If you lose it they put you through hell. But you can totally hand it to someone and tell them the pin. It's not rocket science.

I slaughter a lot of my own meat, so my food budget goes more on things like flour, sugar, spices, etc.
I don't do pre-made mixes, so pretty much everything is made from scratch.
And I have a vege garden that provides a lot as well.

If it was just me living alone, I could probably get by on about $150 a month also, especially now I'm juicing so much.
