Racist video by two Santaluces High girls leads to extra security at school

School officials are grappling with fallout from the widespread release of a YouTube.com video showing two Santaluces High students making racial remarks about fellow students.
The four-minute video, brought to officials' attention late Monday, shows two female teens sitting in front of a camera, one of them brushing her hair, as they ramble about some of the black students in their school.
The teens make derogatory comments about girls who wear hair weaves and talk about how students "start turning black" when they walk into the school. "You catch the disease," one of the girls says, laughing.
After giggling their way through the video, the girls conclude with the phrase "Peace and love!" and flash the peace sign as the video ends.
The video was posted to YouTube multiple times and made its way to other video sites as well. As students at the school saw the video, they posted it to friends' Facebook pages or texted each other links, increasing the video's reach locally.
It has been removed at least twice by YouTube, "as a violation of YouTube's policy prohibiting hate speech," a notice on the website said. The video has also spawned about a dozen video responses from users taking the girls to task for their statements.
"It's groundbreaking territory," Santaluces Principal Kathleen Orloff said when asked how the district plans to deal with the two students, who recorded and posted the video outside of school hours.
She said the district's legal department is looking into the issue and that officials in the district are discussing a plan of action. "Kids think they have this anonymity on YouTube or Facebook, because they're not talking face-to-face with a person," she said.
Palm Beach County School District officials confirmed the girls are Santaluces students but district spokeswoman Vickie Middlebrooks did not disclose the girls' ages or grade level.
"Appropriate action will be taken according to district policy," Middlebrooks wrote in a prepared statement. "Racist comments are unacceptable and have no place in our school district."
A man who answered the phone at one of the girls' homes identified himself as her father and directed questions to criminal defense attorney Michael Salnick, who said the family is coping with the situation as best it can. Asked whether hate crime or other charges were possible, Salnick declined comment in detail. "People turn to attorneys for advice," he said.
School Police Chief Jim Kelly said his department added extra officers to the Santaluces campus today to ensure the safety of students but that there were no issues.
"The school will be looking at this situation to take appropriate action," Kelly said. "Social media is new, so a lot of these situations are new. The district will have to look at this and determine what the appropriate action is."
Orloff said she sent an automated phone message to parents this afternoon explaining the situation and urging parents to use the incident as a teachable moment, "to talk about mindless prejudice and expose it."
She also gave students at the school a brief speech over the intercom at the end of the day, quoting Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and telling the students to respond "with intelligence and non-violence."
Santaluces High is 27 percent white, 35 percent black and 33 percent Hispanic, according to the latest enrollment numbers from the school district.
This is the second time this month the 2,300-student school has received unwanted attention. Earlier this month, one Santaluces High student was shot and killed, allegedly by another, apparently in a dispute over a bicycle.
Frank "Frankie" Quarles, 15, allegedly gunned down 16-year-old Michael Robertson, just blocks from the school. Quarles was indicted for first-degree murder and charged as an adult.
"We have worked hard to instill a culture of respect for all people, and Santaluces is at the front line of that," school board vice chairwoman Debra Robinson said today . "I'm comfortable these students were outliers on the campus."
Janiqua Thompson, 14, a freshman at the school, said she watched the video on her phone during 5th period today after hearing about it from others.
"I was shocked," she said, adding that she knew one of the girls in the video from middle school. "I wouldn't have expected them to say something like that."
Kevin Allain, 16, a sophomore, said he thinks the news about the video will affect Santaluces' reputation. "That's not what Santaluces stands for," he said.
