I'm not sure if you realize that you can now drag a picture to google and search for face recognition. They wouldn't have needed any info at all with that function.

I'm not sure, but I think if your picture is on a news link Google is going to consider it public and the opt in probably wouldn't be necessary.

Well, it's not face recognition per se.

There is one piece of software called Google Goggles that is available for Android phones (it may also be usable in Chrome, etc., but I was never curious enough to check).

I can take a photo of say an album cover with my phone, or piece of art, and it searches like images, and brings up everything about it.

Their may software other than that being discussed, but again, never really cared enough to know details from a random pair of tits.

WITSEC had a program that is available for a fee from the contractor, and while it's assuredly outdated its hit/miss ratio is pretty amazing.

It's not face recognition. It's simply a (very powerful) reverse- and similar-image search. It's far more forgiving than Tin-Eye, which is maddeningly literal, so turns up more and better matches (especially when people think they have cropped pictures beyond Tin Eye's capabilities).

Go to images.google.com and drop any image onto the page. You'll see what I mean.

ETA: To clarify, this is simply a capability of Google Images. Drag-and-drop an image, it will perform the reverse- and similar-image search automatically.
