Get your hipster on - what should I listen to that I "probably never heard of"?

What am I missing right now by only tuning in to payola radio and the milquetoast playlists on itunes and spotify?

Difficulty: No rock. I'm bored with loud guitars and stuff.

Industrial Monk
Al Farka Toure
Baaba Maal
His Name Is Alive
Rasputina
The Organic Quartet
Jan and Den Quartet

Cheers.
The Monk is on my list already, and Baaba Maal I've heard. Checking out the rest.

The Civil Wars
David Francey
The Seedy Seeds
ETA: Sam Roberts. If you're not Canadian, that is. If you are, you've heard of him. Tha Canadian Dream is my favorite, or Where Have All the Good People Gone.

Not that these are obscure, but worth a listen, I think, if you haven't already.

Morcheeba (start with Big Calm)
Nick Drake
Robert Plant and Alison Krause - Raising Sand
Pink Martini
Pretty Lights
Lyle Lovett
Collie Buddz
Fleet Foxes
Aimee Mann
Leon Russell has a new one out...kind of resurrected by Elton John

Slang - The Bellweather Project...not new but interesting

Mark Knopfler - among his other stuff he did nice countryish cd with a band he called the Notting Hillbillies - Missing and Presumed Innocent

The award winning soundtrack to Garden State has a lot of jumping off points

Alejandro Escovedo has been called the best songwriter/singer you never heard of

Sorry, can't help you out more than this, Divine Office has been my nano's sounds of choice and liturgical music.

Haven't been able to bear much popular music these last few years.

Roberts is on radio rotation on and off in Scandinavia for some reason, but I never heard him anywhere else.

Tito Puente's gonna be dead, and you're gonna say, "Oh, I've been listening to him for years, and I think he's fabulous."
