The First Amendment of the United States Constitution States:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

The highlighted portion is very important. If any governmental body denies the rights of same sex marriage then they need a constitution lesson. Those that try to force their religious view upon others against same sex marriage shits on the very reason why many migrated to this country, freedom of religion. Freedom of religion also refers to freedom from oppression from religion.

Any other view or decision by government not to allow same sex marriage is a violation of what we hold most sacred and that is freedom. If government does not take a stand for this right than they may as well ball the Constitution up and wipe their collective bigoted asses with it.

Your point?

I am inclined to think his point was that at the time the Constitution was drafted, the founding Fathers would have considered speaking to the question of what is marriage to be best answered by the Church. For them to do so would have violated their definition of a government sanctioned religion.

That said, I think marriages are made and subsequently dissolved with such regularity these days, they should be contractual and limited in length.

So the Constitution is archaic and we should tear it up.

No, we just need to get the bug out of our collective ass over the whole religion is the boogeyman thing and use some common sense. Of course, that assumes common sense is all that common.

Common sense does not apply to the out spoken religious nuts who try to force their belief down the throats of many Americans while they are praying the gay away

This thread doesnt work if there are no defense of marriage act supporters here to.. well , defend.
I would play devils advocate, but I just cant find anything logical in opposing equal rights.

Funny, it says Congress but not the President making changes.

Oops gotta go. It is 0930 hours here and a beautiful 70 degrees. My date has arrived and I am taking her out on the dunes in my buggy and then a nice long shower to get the sand off our sweaty bodies. I really hope she drops the soap. ;)

To read your post, one would think there's a zealot on every corner of every street ferociously wiping the sweat from his brow and the spittle from his lips as he harangues the passersby with fiery sermons on the wages of sin etc. etc.

No. I am not anti religion or anti christian. I am just anti bigot and anti stupid which unfortunately seem to shout the loudest in their midst.

The point you make here is a very good one. The vocal minority is not representative of the Christian majority.

Now, consider that the Constitution was supposed to keep GOVERNMENT out of RELIGION not the other way around.

Now ask yourself why is that.

People like you is why our constitution is worth less and less everyday.

Explain yourself.

"Let us provide in our constitution for its revision at stated periods. What these periods should be nature herself indicates. By the European tables of mortality, of the adults living at any one moment of time, a majority will be dead in about nineteen years. At the end of that period, then, a new majority is come into place; or, in other words, a new generation.... Every constitution, then, and every law, naturally expires at the end of nineteen years. If it be enforced longer, it is an act of force, and not of right." - T. Jefferson

What's the Constitution of the United Arab Emirates say about it?

Another countries Constitution or laws are not relevant to this discussion.

The passage highlighted is interpreted as to prohibit the establishment of a national religion by Congress or the preference by the U.S. government of one religion over another. Essentially separation of church and state which means keep your religious dogma out of my government.

Marriage is not exclusive to Christianity so for Christians to define to the rest of the country or world what marriage is or who can marry is awfully pretentious. Nobody is declaring that a Church be forced to marry same sex couples as it violates their religious faith. Yet their faith is not everybody's faith and should not be used as a tire iron to force others to their will. Same sex marriage hurts no one in this country. For those who rant about family values I ask how many of you are divorced, how many of you have cheated, how many of you have lied? Christians in their bigotry worry about one "sin" that does not effect them personally and ignore the other "sins" they themselves are guilty of committing. See why you are called hypocrites ?
