Watch and listen...

I'm curious if you think it's plausible that a hibernating bear could be attacked and killed by a pack of wolves?

Moose in the snow are easier prey.

But, some bears do tend to be grumpy when they wake up.

I very much doubt it. They sleep in protected nooks and caves and burrows and such where the pack advantage would be nullified, and they don't actually "hibernate" per se, last I read, so there wouldn't be all that much chance to surprise one. The wolf that stuck its head in den and bit a sleeping bear would find itself in a very unhappy and unusually short last few minutes right quick, I'm thinking.

If the bear is lured out of it's den?

I have seen a series of photographs where a grizzly takes a moose kill away from a small pack of wolves.

Maybe then, a blackie. No way a polar or griz is going down to a wolf pack. Unless they're fighting over a kill or protecting young, I doubt they interact much at all.

I know they don't 'sleep the winter away' like we were all told as children. :)

This just happens to be a theory/speculation going around right now as their was recently a black bear carcass found, said to be killed by wolves. Investigation still pending.

I think it was actually believed for a long time by scientists as well.

Interesting. I can see a black bear being attacked and killed by wolves out in the open. Is there a writeup somewhere you can link me to?

I'm not sure about up your way, but around here it's been a seriously unseasonably warm and light-snow winter, the kind where hungry and woozy bears are seen wandering around in January. It's not hard to imagine a hungry pack deciding to try bear meat. Or the bear starved to death and the wolves just ate the carcass.

It's not public knowledge yet...that I know of. This is farmers/MNR talk at the moment, as population control of wolves/coyotes is a hot topic for those of us losing livestock at alarming rates.

Ah.

I'm afraid if we start talking about killing wolves to save cows you and I are going to have to have angry sex instead of the affectionate pervy kind we really want.

-smile-

Just to tweak you, I have to say: You'd feel differently if it were your dog and not my cows, I bet.

Sure, but that's why the dog sleeps inside. The cats, too, and when I had parakeets I kept them indoors also.
...just for starters I hope.

Natch! I figure orgasms 13-42 inclusive will be in your butt.

It is unhealthy and unrealistic for livestock to live indoors - that's just a breeding ground for sickness. Big no-no considering consumers tend to become stupid and start mixing up words like vaccine, hormones, pesticides and organic.

Orgasms via butt play trump all others.

I realize this...but I don't think it's wise to eradicate apex predators in order to protect your cows. I think you need better fences. Guard dogs, maybe.

I knew you liked them...but I didn't realize they were the top choice. I'm taking notes.

Oh honey....I like you too much to bore you with education on the impossibility of 100% safe-guarding livestock. And besides, who said anything about eradication? We're talking population control only.

...what can I say, I've evolved over the years. So have my orgasms.

You should be filling the car with fuel and packing your toothbrush!

-delighted wonder-

What's he going to do with the toothbrush!?!
