I heard an interview with the creator on NPR, he did Deadwood, too. He was talking about his childhood, sneaking into race tracks and how his dad and male relatives were all degenerate gamblers.

I haven't gotten to see any of season two yet, but the first season was pretty good. I wish Macy was less broad, though.

In season 2 Macy's character is taking steps towards being one of the most despicable characters in the history of television. It's hilarious.

In season 2 Macy's character is taking steps towards being one of the most despicable characters in the history of television. It's hilarious.

That actually sounds promising, as long as the show acknowledges the despicable-ness. What bugged me in the first season was that he was obviously a leech on society and a disgraceful failure as a parent, and yet he played his character with a twinkle in his eye, like we were supposed to find his antics endearing.

I find that annoying as well. I guess it's a judgement call for the viewer. I don't find him endearing at all. He is a despicable con-artist.
