Did I not read somewhere, that what was Republican in the 1800's is now pretty much today's Democrat stance, and vice versa? I swear I think I read that back around the last election...I will look it up and see if I can find links...

Each party's philosophy is based on what they think will win the enough votes. While the philosophy may change, the fact that they are for the most part corrupt liars, who care little for anything outside their own interest remains the same.....
 
Politicians flee to whichever party promises a place at the public trough. Democrats controlled Congress till their ranks filled with assclowns. Independents wont elect assclowns.

Why limit yourself to the option given? Expand your horizons and think outside the box, there is always another choice even if it is not listed. Given that, there is no such thing as a false trichotomy. Just a made up word, stolen from a real math theory by a pseudo intellectual who did not understand the original theory.

If the link is correct, then Lincoln was a Democrat...if the ideology of the Rep's in the 1850's is now the ideology of the Dem's...and Vice Versa...
