Were there democrats at the time? I thought Republicans were the progressive party and Whiggs were the conservative party of the time.

But I'm not known around here for my intellect.

If the link is correct, then Lincoln was a Democrat...if the ideology of the Rep's in the 1850's is now the ideology of the Dem's...and Vice Versa...

It's less that the ideology has changed than it is that the original reason the Republicans came into existence, abolishing slavery, became moot pretty quickly. The parties eventually found plenty of other things to disagree about, though.

These reversals have happened before in American history. Thomas Jefferson and his supporters believed in a weak federal government with strictly enumerated powers...until the opportunity came to buy Louisiana, which Jefferson wisely chose to do without wringing his hands about whether it was a federal power grab or not.

The Republicans eventually replaced the Whigs as the "other party" in American politics, because the Whigs never had much of an organization and fell apart over slavery. The Whigs were "conservative" in the sense that they first coalesced over opposition to Andrew Jackson, but they took other policies that might appear liberal today, such as the belief that states' rights were subordinate to the national interest.

Each party's philosophy is based on what they think will win the enough votes. While the philosophy may change, the fact that they are for the most part corrupt liars, who care little for anything outside their own interest remains the same.....

Your statement has more validity when applied to individual power brokers within any given party. But the parties as a whole do have philosophies even if they have fights over those philosophies from time to time. For the time being the democrat party is fairly united in it's philosophy which is decidedly socialist. The republicans are not so united with a huge split between the conservatives and the traditional party elite (socialist lite).

He was once there was a Republican party to join, yes. He was elected to Congress as a Whig, but pretty much all the northern Whigs eventually became Republicans.

It's funny how we look back at who we think the great presidents were. We never start with what party they were in. I don't think I could start a conversation with anyone that would even know what the Whig's stood for and most people wouldn't even know what I was talking about.
