Universal is closing the Jaws ride

It's dated, and had recurring mechanical problems from the very beginning.
It is way past time they replaced it with something else.

One of the all time great rides. I was ok with them replacing Back to the Future with The Simpsons but replacing Jaws is just wrong.
That Harry Potter virtual ride is pretty fuckin' awesome though. I gotta give credit where it's due.

Cool story time...
In 1979, I was the night-shift supervisor for the security company that ran Universal Studios. The place was even bigger back then, they still had their enormous backlot (no stupid CityWalk). To do my job, I had the ultimate Universal Studios perk: an AA access badge for my car (AA=anytime, anywhere). I used this to drive around the lot to make sure the 20-30 set guards and roving patrols were not sleeping on duty.

The "Jaws" ride was brand new back then, and was the highlight of the Universal tour.

Sometimes on my off nights, when I was out on a date, I'd say "hey I have to check something at work on the Universal lot, mind if I swing by there? It'll only take a minute." then I'd drive in through the back entrance, take a shortcut and drive over the "Amityville" bridge which would trigger the water cannons and the mechanical shark. It's much more realistic around midnight (and I could drive real close to the railing, so the shark would come right up to the passenger window).

Fun times. :D
