I have an unwanted christmas gift. Do I give it to a registered charity or to a homeless person?

Poll coming.

I never give cash.
I use the cash to buy useful stuff, which I then donate.
Last year I bought $100 worth of veges and took them to our local soup kitchen.
That way - I know absolutely that my money/donation is not being used for administrative costs, or in the case of a homeless person, alcohol.

Yeah, I kinda hate that moralising judgemental crap though. If they want to blow it on booze, then they have the freedom to do that.

To me, it's a complete waste of my hard-earned dollars if they blow it on alcohol/drugs.
That may be judgemental, but I want to see my money do something better than a quick high.

That's a pretty sweeping fucking assumption and rather disgusting.

maybe where you live, homeless people are better?
Where I live, just about every homeless person I see sleeping on the streets has a cask of cheap wine cradled lovingly in their arms.
It's not disgusting - .it's real, and rather sad.

when i have extra money, i spend it on food and cleaning products for our local animal shelter. i give product in the hopes that it frees up their existing funds to buy something else much needed.

Where I live most homeless people are women and children, and they're not out on the streets or in the subway station begging. I'm sure where you are homeless people are better than you give them credit for as well. Stereotyping is ugly.

What kinda gift? :D

It's kind of hard to say. I'm just going to take a wild guess - is it something you'd use at home?

I would give it to an established charity. You never know. Someone out there may be looking for what you have.

It's good of you all the same.

Donate to charity = tiny drop in a large ocean.
50 squid to some random homeless person = someone's life changed immeasurably, even if only for a couple of hours.

The local animal shelter could use warm blankets and food for animals with winter setting in. Just a suggestion.

Wait, $50 is your unwanted xmas gift?
I don't know who doesn't want $50, but anyway.

$25 each. Sorted. :)

It's a good way to stay warm.

That and being homeless fucking sucks. Try it sometime.

At least with a charity you get a receipt for tax deduction. Well, in the US, anywho.

sean's right - inasmuch as £50 making a huge difference to a homeless person. but how do you go about choosing your 'cause'? go looking for the homeless, and chances are you'll find more than one person in need - how would you decide?

a suggestion: if you can't decide about that one, do you know of a family or person who might have a roof over their heads but who are really struggling? maybe an anonymous card through the door? gas and electricity don't come cheap this time of year.

i guess what i'm saying is that i applaud your intentions, but often the application gets more complicated than one might expect. go with your heart, i guess - you might just see someone out in the street that looks as if they could use the help.

Cash? I think you'd get more bang for your buck, so to speak, by doling it out to 5 different homeless people. The charities are fine but I think you'd make more of a difference in an individual's life.

Even if it's just a wtf? response, it gives them a bit of hope and happiness, even for a second. With a charity it seems to just be diluted...

This. And its what I did.

WQ is pretty well known for her reactionary right wing racist views. I'm totally unsurprised.

As much as I love animals, I never give money to animal charities. Most of them are run by nutters who care about animals mopre than people and are so wealthy half the time they don't know what to do with the cash.

£50 not dollars. It was given to me by someone who is a bit like vetgit. Thinks they can buy affection. I cannot be bought for any price.

I'm too lazy to do the £. He tried to buy your affection for £50?
