I had a cousin that was severely retarded. (Yes, that was the term back than.) My MIL dated a man with a retarded daughter. A Publix near me employees some as bag boys. These folks are some of the sweetest people you will ever meet. Overall, much nicer than the general population.

In most states, including mine, public schools educate students with even profound deficiencies. The teachers and classroom assistants measure the progress there in tiny increments. In today's political climate, when it seems to be open season on teachers, I think of these hardworking people toiling with so few rewards. It helps distract me from what a lazy teacher I am.

Yeah, you're supposed to use the least restrictive placement available- the more inclusion you can achieve, the better. They're trying to get away from "Special Ed" classrooms and incorporating students with disabilities into the normal class dynamic whenever possible. Take a lot of "teaching the exceptional child" classes because you're going to have those students in your classes whether you're really trained for them or not.
