I have always been highly into the BDSM culture and have been looking to submerge myself into a little more than just reading and fantasizing. I'm not quite sure on how to start getting into getting more experience or how to go about approaching someone about the subject. Any advice?

Don't suuuuubbbbmmmiiitttt to the first guy who points at the floor-- instead, make friends with doms and subs (And tops and bottoms) alike. Start by "bottoming" rather than by "Submitting." Be promiscuous in play, choosey in relationships. Listen to a bit of gossip, remembering that for most people "Dom" is an excuse for co-dependency, and take it all with a grain of salt.

Don't expect too many immersion type events, although they do exist.

I agree with Stella_Omega about fetlife - and DEFINITELY pay attention to the gossip in the local areas. Realize that you can't trust everything you hear about people, however its good to recognize where there is some turmoil. I'm constantly amazed that even on FL that despite being all about acceptance of BDSM in all its forms and for all the shades along the spectrum, that people will be people. Maybe you're not sub or Dom enough, or if you prefer monogamy that the poly's will snub you, or if you don't believe in serious pain you're not masochist enough. So take it slow, but explore it with a smile!
