Writing Goal for the Day?

This would go back to my earlier post when I mentioned the acts I was writing about. I'm trying to keep everything at the same level, without glorifying it, but bringing a descriptive reality to it. TV shows like CSI have given the masses a taste of the macabre and are once again dulling down the senses to make it acceptable.

Never mind CSI. Have you watched Criminal Minds? Talk about trying to dull the senses. Thomas Harris could get ideas from these people.

Are you talking about here? Because this isn't mainstream, and probably has a lower tolerance of brutality.

And yes, many would like to live in "ignorance is bliss" rather than think that as a race we can be so inherently cruel.

And although you're delving into the past to find this, it is still here in the modern day which makes it even worse as we are supposed to be more sophisticated then back in the 16th century. Hitler was 70 years ago, a drop in the bucket time wise.

But not everyone is as shocked as you seem to think they will be, and if you are writing a fictional piece they may want to think you made it up anyway.

No offense to you, but I take offense at comments like "if people only knew what I know" comes across a little pretentiously.

My particular studies of history has been based on cults and their practices so I doubt anything you are coughing up would be anything I would consider too brutal.

I tossed a ritual killing into a story here for the hell of it and against the warning of my editor and some friends. The result? 4.81 people are not as easily offended as you think.

"So true,Jimmy. If people only knew what REALLY happened and not a glossed over account, their safe little worlds would crash in on them and leave them in a state of shock."
I don't see where I said, "if people only knew what I know". I was stating a fact of life as you are obviously aware of. Let's keep it straight and not mince words.

Again, I stated that it started out as 30% real and 70% fiction, but it has turned around and now it's more factual history, with me throwing my story in it. So anyone looking up facts in my story will find quite a great deal of them.

Mainstream in my opinion isn't here. This is going for publishing into paper and Ebook. I gave the first 18 chapters a go on here as a test run and it was accepted very well. I got the feedback I was looking for, so I knew I was on the right track. Now that I'm on ch 48 and at least a dozen or more to go, I'm making sure I leave nothing to chance. This is aimed at a worldwide market for a variety of readers, so I want every genre to stand on its own and create a cohesive story overall.

I watch very little TV, but I have seen a couple episodes of CM. It was very graphic as you mention. I think the issue that I got back in feedback, was that it was too distasteful to have the men make sport of killing the way they did, yet history has shown it to be a fact.
I remember scenes from Schindler's List that still leave an impression on me. War films haven't been Hollywoodized and many other accounts from the Pacific theatre show brutality and inhumanity at its worst.

The opening of my latest tale features an old woman getting smacked with a TeeBall bat.

No need to watch TV. I get some of my most disturbing ideas from the newspaper. And I have recognized some of the stories in CSI and CM as having been lifted from the headlines.

Theres nuthin new under the Sun, theres only novel apps for old deeds.

So I finished the first scene of my latest and now I am torn. The forst scene features a young guy (well of course he's 18!) with his girlfriend(yes 18) the premise is he is tired of her being sweet and he is hoping she'll start fucking more hardcore. she promises she will try, but well the scene ends badly when he starts telling her she's being a good little slut and starts trying to fuck her mouth.

The point of the scene was that is part of how his mother (yes its incest) ends up seducing him, she's promising him all those "bad girl" things.

Now here's the problem I read through it again and I see the potential for another story using this scene (non incest) so now I'm thinking of rather than writing the failed girlfriend scene out in detail, just having him coming home frustrated and "recall" a few of the details.

I am totally undecided so right now am continuing with the story and hoping when I'm done I'll have made my mind up.

I have a plot bunny that won't shut the hell up so I think I'll have write the idea down, not really outlining. Maybe use the Writer's Cafe software on it. I haven't used it much since I got it for a gift.

Trying to get to the sex

Frustrated to the point of throwing this story into my "ideas" bin and forgetting about it. I love the idea of "secret" knowledge being used for erotic results. For example, someone finding a partner's secret journal, observing a partner wanking off to specific material, overhearing a conversation they weren't meant to hear, whatever.

Maybe describing the storyline will help.

This idea is VERY loosely based on Dr. Brennon from the TV show "Bones." My character isn't afflicted with her personality disorder, but she's intelligent and analytical.

She has just finished doing a research project evaluating how secretly bisexual people react to television commercials featuring gay characters. In the course of designing and implimenting the research project, she has uncovered a group of people (friends and colleagues) with secret bisexual pasts. Excited and intrigued, she wants to throw a party and see if what might happen for her own purient reasons.

Her helper is a former intern and current lesbian "fuck buddy." Her "victims" (research subjects, if you will) are a combination of friends and colleagues.

Here's my problem: trying to get past the set-up and into the fucking party where all the fun manipulation (and resulting sex) will take place! I want it to be clear and believable that Darla "knows" things about her guests, so I keep describing the study design and how it could provide her with secret knowledge - at the expense of getting to the actual story.

Here's how I see the initial plotting:

1) Introduction of Darla and her intern accompliance during the set-up for the party.
2) Revealing enough details of Darla's "secret knowledge" and how she acquired it to be exciting and believable to the reader. <---This is where I'm stuck.
3) The party begins... and from there, I should be fine.

I love the idea that Darla "knows" things about her party guests' pasts. That she'll be able to manipulate them in subtle ways, coaxing them to move outside of their comfort zones. To me, that's the meat and potatoes of the story - the party. But I don't want to spend 3000 words setting it up! I don't believe my readers want to wait that long for the sex to get started.

So, my writing goal for today remains the same as it was yesterday and the day before - getting the set-up out of the way so I can tell the damn story I want to tell! Fuck, I hate exposition!

Hmmm....

That seems like too juicy a plot for short story level, to me, but you could do it if you 'cheated' the order of things.

Open with the sex, throw in the plot, and end with more sex described in the same way as the opening scene

Also, I don't care what anyone says, that Bones lady does not have a disorder, she's just too right in her own mind, and an ignorant bitch. There's a huge and unignorable difference between the reality that character is supposedly based on, and the 'disorder' of a fictional TV persona by a writer.

My writing goal for the day?

MORE TYPING.

I am going to finish this damn chapter today, and I'm going to do it at work.

I figure that with all the hours I worked last week at home--not to mention all the hours I worked this weekend--they can give me a few here in the building.

Hope everyone is staying warm!

No writing goal at this time. I will most likely try tomorrow. I have a sick kid home with me today, so I think I'll start my Christmas cookie baking and leave the writing to you folks for the time being.

I have one more chapter in a habu novella to write and about thirty pages to review in a Shabbu novel, both of which I hope to get done today. Off to a two-day office party in Washington, D.C. tomorrow. Not taking the laptop with me.

Aw, sorry about the sick little one. Hope they're better soon.

I'm working on R&B and trying to make sure I don't catch up with myself. I'd hoped to have this done to the point of just posting one a week but after emails w/my beta reader, who suggested a change, I am now changing Chs 7, 8 and 9. Ch 5 was just submitted, though, so think I'm okay. Might take a break over the holiday week, and I hate to leave people hanging but that would probably work out best.

I keep writing and writing and the stories keep expanding and expanding.

*Sigh* One day I might write a really short story but not anytime soon. *sigh*

My goal for the day? The same as every day: To take over the world!

* * * *

Skipped lunch, managed to get a thousand words done on DM3. That will have to do, for now.

Read Cormac McCarthys BLOOD MERIDIAN first chance you get. I do believe he invented horror with this one. He's miles beyond Stephen King's imagination. And whats insane is, its all real.

I had planned to write after work, but as soon as I stepped into the house, I felt sick. Three hours of a nap later, I'm ready to write.

Done.

Thank fuck.

I'm not 100% happy with it, but I don't have the time to get it there. Oh well.

Also, Britain's William Hague (Foreign Secretary?) has a spectacularly stereotypical accent. Wow. It's a good thing I don't have to endure meetings with him--I'd spend the entire time marveling at it.

10,000 words written today (the last chapter of a habu novella and a short story) and three chapters of a Shabbu novel reviewed. On the road tomorrow.

I'm taking a half day of vacation to take delivery of our replacement-in-kind fridge. We've been over a week without a functioning fridge! DH told me not to let my guard down with the delivery men, which, of course, sent a plot bunny racing thru my head. Hmmm....

Thanks very much. She was able to make it to school once her over-the-counter meds kicked in.

Today I definitely want to write, but also have more baking to get done. But I have another story brewing in my mind, so I may get a few preliminary paragraphs down so I don't lose the idea.

So, I gave up on the idea about the behavioral scientist for the time being. After writing and re-writing the opening at least half a dozen times, I feel as if I finally worked it down to a consise size that sets the stage and allows for the sex. But now I'm so sick of thinking about those characters that I don't care if they ever get laid.

So, instead, I'm going to write up the core sex scene as a separate, stand alone piece. I'm going to be guilty of writing a sex scene for the sake of writing a sex scene, but screw it. I've already given myself permission and I know, somehow, I'll throw in a bit of a plot.

I'm feeling a sea change towards more character driven stories versus plot driven stories and I'm not sure I like it.
