It's also part of the reason why I believe some of us choose to keep our sexual choices private - especially those of us who are bisexual. Too many pinheads at both ends of the spectrum are too interested in branding us as one or the other. And once we're branding as being "one of them," our voices vanish. It's such a joy to be considered a threat to both the hetereo and homosexual communities. Though it IS funny when my gay friends will seek my authoritative opinion concerning matters of heterosexuality since, you know, "You swing that way, too." While my in-the-know heterosexual friends will quite often say the same thing for the same reason.

I will say my homosexual friends, in general, are more accepting of differences than my heterosexual friends. But I can say the same thing about my Democratic friends versus Republican friends. Or my Wiccian friends versus my Christian Fundamentalist friends.

Meanwhile, I've very content to be in the middle, standing on the fence, and collected the sweetest fruit from the higher branches on both sides, scratching my head as I channel Rodney King's inane, "People, I just want to say, you know, can we all get along?" It's our differences that keep things interesting, including our differences of opinions.

Oh, Stella, I do NOT mean to suggest that openly gay couples do not face HUGE challenges in society. I know they do and apologize if that's how my words came across. You're 100% correct, I can express my affection towards a female much more openly than I can with a male. It sucks having to look over your shoulder 24/7 and feeling as if you're not allowed to just be you. I've seen similar things happen to mixed race individuals as well as friends and family who are in mixed race relationships. I guess I'm still stinging some from yesterday's banter with Safe_Bet.

Until we reach the all accepting, all embracing society we wish to occupy - I believe we each carry an obligation to root out prejudice in all of its guises and actively work against it in all the ways we can muster as individuals. For some, it's how we raise our children. For others, it's marching in a parade, holding a protest, making a stand in court or... dare I say it: asking a potentially moronic question in an open forum to double check oneself.

The fundamentalist Christian who, in the privacy of their voting booth, votes in support of gay marriage, to me, is important to the movement, too. As much as two men openly kissing in front of the polls? That's a matter of opinion, but I won't disrespect one for the other. Correct minded people need to do what they can more often and we'll get there. But then again, I'm an eternal optimist and dreamer. I always have been. I blame my mom.

Now for this bullshit. Gay marriage, or marriage in general, or social unities, can ONLY be regulated or modified by a Constitutional Amendment so that state law does not circumvent federal. There is not a federal definition of marriage, so that must be formed by everyone, gay and straight and bi alike.

If you believe your point of view to be correct, then why not let the country as a whole vote their belief?

More than one version of an amendment can be circulated, and if the vote goes against what you believe, just look at the repeal of Prohibition or Slavery and try again.

I understand and believe that anyone has the right to tie and bind themselves to another person legally. I have no problem with the institution of marriage, hell, you could marry a fruit cup for all I care, but it's not up to soley me, or you, in a 'democratic' society.

Just remember, out of the gay unties that have been made, some are already divorcing.

Here's a thought I've pondered since I started reading this thread.

Why does it always boil down to a name? Seems that is always the issue with everything.
Human rights are denied because we put a name on someone and made them different. We create a distinction between us solely because we put a name to something and said they were different for doing it, so it's not acceptable.

Is a name really necessary? Does it mean so much to have that distinction and continue the controversy? I try to think of a scenario where a young child sees two men or two women holding hands and asks his parent about them. Without a name, the answer is simply, "two people who love each other, son."

Utopian sure, but it still comes down to a name. Apparently 'straight' people don't have a name, so they feel left out and dislike those that do.

When did the word 'fairy' begin to be utilized to diss homosexual men and why was that one chosen?? I always thought fairies were those humanoid things that flew around in the woods on gauzy wings and made Pinocchio a real boy.

Consequently, the line 'There are fairies in the bottom of my garden' and the book title 'The Fairie Queen' by Edmund Spencer usually will evoke snickers among school kids, much like the poem title 'There Is No Frigate Like A Book'.

The English language is constantly evolving, as do it's ethnic and sexual orientation insults ... twas ever thus. Some so-called 'normal' people will never be truly accepting of others who don't fit their prevailing norm matrix and so the derogatory names continue to proliferate. It may be annoying and provoke anger in those who are not 'normal' and that's fully understandable.

I think the average person is indifferent to race and sexual orientation as opposed to the bigots and the intolerant among us. Unfortunately, intolerance is ingrained in human nature (think xenophobia) and only education, familiarity and time will change that.
