Over the last year or so there has been a spate of news stories coming out on genetic research that throws more light on Neanderthals and early man.

Neanderthals, Humans Interbred, DNA Proves

(Early humans also mated with early apes, so this could be considered an early form of social climbing.)

All non-Africans are part Neanderthal, genetics confirm

(Which means those skinhead theories were completely ass backward, and who didn’t suspect that?)

Sex with Neanderthals Made Us Stronger

(Isn’t it disheartening to learn that our species gained more from those encounters than did the Neanderthals?)

Neanderthal Extinction Explained by Interbreeding

(Finally it appears that early humans found Neanderthals so sexy, and that they pestered them for sex so much, that the poor Neanderthals had no energy left to breed with themselves.)

There should be a lesson in that, not to mention a story, but the only thing I can come up with is a Neanderthal strutting along the path singing “I’m Too Sexy for My Genes.”

Good Find, that.

Wish a citation had been given as this is a fascinating subject. See:

Paabo is considered the leader in the field, and an extraordinary scientist, but very thin skinned. He has been questioned on a portion of his work, and apparently gone into a tirade (Don Johnanson, finder of Luch--Australopithecine, as well as author of Lucy's Legacy). As info only, not a judgement.

Thank you for bringing this up, though I'm not sure about the "sex" emphasis you seem to warn about. Again, perhaps a citation for your seeming question would help us.

Being absorbed into another subspecies is not an uncommon route to extinction. The North America Black Duck will probably disappear as mallards expand into its habitat and the sexier, bright colored male mallards attract the black duck hens. Rainbow trout interbreed with many other trout varieties and they become uniform hybrids as the aggressive rainbows either migrate into new areas or are planted by people. The pheasant we have in North America is a conglomeration of several discrete varieties that normally never meet in their native Asia but once released into the grain fields of the Dakotas and other places found each other very attractive. So why should we be surprised that it happened to a kind of people?

There are other ways that sex can lead to extinction: Try getting it on with that linebacker's wife.

You're kidding, right?

No. Did I sound like I was?

You appear to have a bug in your humor detector, but I CAN give you a source.

Had I seen that I would not have bothered with it.

I had thought this might start some story ideas percolating, but could only come up with bad jokes.

Uh-huh, I see that now. Good luck on story ideas.

Thought other might do better.

Sorry I interrupted your thread. Please continue.

Uum ... You do understand that all those headlines in my first post are links? Just click on them.

There are four citations in that post, that's why I asked if you were kidding.

No, I did not. Thus:

My humble and public apology to you, and my thanks.

If it weren't for the enthusiastic Chinese, I'm pretty confident that the daftest of nears, the Giant Panda would be extinct by now.
After all, it is too stupid to go forth and multiply. The males' penis has shrunk to minuscule size, and the female is only receptive for about one day per year.

So I wonder if the Neanderthal had something of a similar problem ?

Maybe the Neanderthal female was really randy and the males were satiated? causing the females to gang up on unsuspecting human males and fucking for fun?
