i want to get to know you better

#52. With the holidays around the corner, what are some of the traditions that you and your family do to celebrate the season?

Thanksgiving normally consists of putting up the Christmas tree and starting to decorate it. Christmas is my favorite holiday and I absolutely ADORE Christmas lights. The jewel toned multi-color strands make me deliriously happy. I have very eclectic ornaments and always buy a new one every year to add to my collection. Now I buy an extra one so my daughter will have the start of an ornament collection when she grows up and has her own place. I put on a CD of holiday music, make a huge pot of hot chocolate, and get to work on the tree.

Christmas Eve is huge in our family. My mom and I always cook way too much food....appetizers of all shapes and varieties followed by a HUGE dinner and loads of desserts. We start baking our Christmas cookies the week before and the whole family (and some friends) get involved in making 50 different varieties of cookies. We always make our standard recipes and add one or two new ones to try out.

After dinner, we tend to play board games for laughs. I am the Queen of Trivial Pursuit and Cranium. :) We grew up playing board games all the time. Milles Bourne is the bane of my Dad's existence. He always get flat tires and can never get them fixed. lol The traditions have changed a bit as far as presents go now that there's a grandchild for my parents to spoil. :) We used to do the "open one present on Christmas Eve" thing when I was little at my grandparents house. I miss that tradition. My bro and his wife let my daughter open her presents on Christmas Eve, as do my parents. We do the family gift exchange then too. My bro and sis-in-law go to her parents house for Christmas Day, so I started a new tradition last year. :) I host a Christmas Brunch at my home for my parents. It was wonderful last year. Just a variety of different things....a Pecan French Toast casserole, lemon almond ricotta muffins, monkey bread, fruit, a breakfast taco station (tortillas, scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, potatoes...mmmm), bagel basket, and lunchmeat spread. My parents LOVED it and wouldn't stop talking about it all year. I love it because it takes mimimal effort and I'm able to concentrate on my girl opening her presents Christmas morning without having to worry about rushing somewhere.

And yes....I AM the girl who leaves her Christmas lights up until after Valentine's Day. lol
