What is your "memory" song?

I have been listening to depressing music and thinking about the twisted turns that life sometimes takes. What song do you hear that makes you think about a situation in your life?

For me it has to be Father and Son by Cat Stevens. I have great memories of sitting by a bonfire at the beach drinking rum while a friend played it on the guitar. Now whenever I hear that song I smile and remember how innocent and easy life once was.

George Michael's "Turn A Different Corner" because sometimes I wonder when I think of bittersweet memories I have had with a person...what if we had turned a different corner and never met? Same thing with Garth Brook's "The Dance" the end of a relationship with it's ups and downs...but as bad as some of it was...you are greatful for the dance...

"Aluminum," by the Barenaked Ladies. When my wife (then girlfriend) was teaching me to play guitar, that was the first song I learned to play on my own. To this day she loves that song, so I wanted to impress her by picking up the guitar one day and just belting it out for her. Since I rarely sang, back then, that was also kind of a big deal for me.

Whenever I hear it, I remember her smile as I started strumming, and I end up smiling myself for the entire day.

Way too many to mention. Music is so much intrenched in my life, that it would be difficult to pick just one music/life event. Off the top of my head, I remember one song I heard at a time I thought I was in trouble with college officials. It wasn't true, but it looked bad so I expected the worst. Luckily, the truth came through and I came out OK.

The song itself had nothing to do with the event, other than to mark the event with a time in my history. I have many songs like this where I can remember where I was when I first heard songs, and sometimes even remember smells. Some are emotionally significant, and some aren't.

I was a lifeguard for 3 summers, in my high school years. The pool had an AM "Top 40" radio station playing every day. I can now hear some of those same songs from those days and remember the hot summer sun beating down on me and even remember the smell of the chlorinated water. Even the old jingles from commercials or radio spots...they're all still in my head.

It might sound hard to believe, but it's true. I know I haven't heard some of those songs or jingles since my lifeguard days, so that helps with the memories. People wonder how I can sing what are now oldie songs "word for word". It's because I heard them every fucking day, sometimes several times a day, all summer long. I might not remember the group or even the name of the song, but once that song starts playing, I'm there.

Ah … the emotional memory of music. Much like muscle memory, the more we relate a song to a person or place, the easier it is for us to grasp those emotional deposits after just the first few notes.
For me…

I lost my virginity to "Leather & Lace" by Tom Petty and Stevie Nicks. If I had only known ………
I discovered my true love with "I am a Rock" by Simon & Garfunkel. And I lost him to "Lady In Red" by Chris Deberg. I still can't listen to the whole song all the way through.

My love came back to me and told me I was His angel in "Blue Jeans and a Rosary" by Kid Rock.

Ah … so many songs and so many lovers in between ……

Great lifeguard story. This is how it works for me. I have songs indelibly inked onto skin life moments. I listen to a lot of music, and always have, and a scan through siriusXM is like a synaptic home movie.

My other one is Every Rose has It's Thorn - Poison

That song came on the radio as I was literally driving away and "escaping" an incredibly toxic relationship. My entire life was packed in the only car I managed to leave with and I was moving to an entirely different island with no job, $800 cash no place to stay and to a place I knew no one.

It reminds me to always trust in my decisions and no matter how dark life seems that you can always take control and trust in yourself and everything will eventually work out and sometimes it works out better than it was before.

I don't remember where I heard it, but I love the line "My radio is a time machine", because for me it couldn't be more true. (Except my "radio" is actually Pandora streaming all my custom stations over my smartphone of course. ) I have too many to list, but here are a few...

~ I left home as a teen under strained circumstances and the entire Counting Crows August and Everything After album recalls all different facets of that time for me. Murder of One & Perfect Blue Buildings are the two that stand out in my mind the most.

~Depeche Modes Blue Dress brings to mind a vivid memory of an entire weekend with my cousin and all we did was eat, drink slurpees and listen to awesome music. He was the first true audiophile I had ever experienced, and time spent with him helped me to really appreciate music in a much deeper way. Blue Dress is also my favorite DM song.

~Lean on Me is of course such a great heartfelt song, but for me it is also a song that carries with it a very dark and complex memory.

~Portishead Numb reminds me of when I first met my soon to be ex husband.

~Sarah McLachlan is all tangled up with my first love; Ice Cream when it was doughy eyed, and I love you when it was over.

~Robert Miles ~ Fable takes me back to when I was spending my weekends glowing in black lights, dancing for hours, and sitting inside speaker boxes.

~Put the Lime in the Coconut reminds me of my Dad because he used to sing it all the time and I always thought it was nonsense he made up, until I hear dit on the radio one day and was shocked THEY were singing HIS song.

~Boz Scaggs ~ Lowdown brings to mind the memory of a concert/date with a love that lives in my most tender place in my heart.

Like others, music has been a big part of my life. My mother always had music playing. She told me that from the day I was born, she would dance across the apartment floors with me in her arms. When I was a child, we would stay up late on the weekends, playing records and dancing for hours in the living room.

My first post has to be to those memories. Whenever I hear [URL="http://youtu.be/23UkIkwy5ZM"]The Supremes[/URL], I always think about those nights.

Being a pretty musical person I've got lots.

"Blue and Sentimental" - Buddy Rich version...reminds me of a musician guy who I had the hots for...just hearing the first few bars of intro before the melody and he's instantly on my mind.

"Blame it on My Youth" - Jane Monheit version...the first time that someone called me out...the first time someone really read me and threw my flaws back in my face...it hurt and stung a little, and I remember putting my ipod on shuffle and it was the first time I heard that song and it just felt appropriate.

"So Close" from Enchanted...the time I found out my Master had found another girl that he liked...we had talked about it...but it was hard to hear how it happened and I was listening to it right before he called me so it stays in my mind.

"Bosom Buddies" from Auntie Mame...my mom and I used to sing this as a duet when I was little...reminds me of the good times in my childhood and reminds me of before my mom had her aneurysm and went through many health issues.
