I watched the 2009 movie "the road" and I am perplexed as to the exact nature of the mysterious and unnamed doomsday event which wiped out nearly all life on Earth and transformed the planet into a barren, post-apocalyptic wasteland. A world where the only means of survival is either through canned food or cannibalism.

They never explained exactly what this sudden cataclysm event was. A meteor impact? Total nuclear war? Some sort of super-pandemic?

The only thing in my mind that could create conditions similar to what was depicted in the road is an impact with a giant meteor or asteroid.

Strange, and very disturbing book and film.

It's not really meant to be known. The book explores only the bleak situation we find ourselves in afterwards, and I've always found it interesting that people have a hard time coming to terms with that. It's as if they can't deal with all the horror without knowing who or what to blame it on, and so they develop their own theory as to what happened that gave rise to the world of The Road.

What they don't realize is that they're engaging in a psychological exercise; their guesses reveal more about themselves than about what happened.

It's my favorite book.

Crazy about Cormac,
Ellie

You, I would eat.

How flattering! I would rather strike a bargain, though... you could nibble on my arm if I could nibble on one of yours. I'd offer a leg, but they're harder to go without.

Rambling on the Road,
Ellie

We have extermely good taste.

Well, go with this possibility.

Is this the one where Charlize Theron went off to freeze leaving her hubby and kid behind because there weren't enough bullets?

Reminds me, I gotta record The Walking Dead....

really when you think about it, the road is about obama's 2nd term in office

I'm pretty sure she has a second one out. I recall seeing it at the B&N, but I didn't buy it.

Why are you buying books at B&N when you can do one stop shopping on your Kindle. I believe we bought ours at about the same time.
I love it and really do not miss paper books at all. I will, however, buy one every now and then. It's kind of like visiting the olden days

The battery on my Kindle won't hold a charge. It lasts... like 5 minutes. I'm back to the paper versions :)

Besides, I scour the bargain bin and those books are even cheaper than the e-books!

BargainHunterJohnny!!

That's strange. Mine will hold a charge for about 2 weeks. They are suppose to hold it for a month.

omg, you are so right on! I love to visit B&N and find hidden treasures for $5.99 or less and sadly this will disappear as more books move to ebook format.

I got a bum battery!

From what I understand, the battery can't be replaced, although I haven't taken the thing apart (yet) to see if that's true.

Besides, I like the book store experience. All those books...
