Hi,
I have a problem; I am looking for a particular kind of editorial help. I have several stories written but not yet ‘polished’ enough (to my mind) to put forward for publication, they lack an element of 'feminine perspective', I’m not sure that my portrayal is wholly ‘accurate’ and cohesive.

My stories fall generally into the ‘romance’ category though I intend them to go in the ‘novelettes’ listings. They range in setting from current to sci-fi to wizards and magic, an eclectic mix built around boy meets girl and then they make love.

I have for almost a year now been searching for an editor to help me with this, I’ve had several that started out fine but either dropped or found reason to excuse themselves. My last two attempts saw a five part story have three chapters finished and a ten part story have five of its chapters finished. Some of the reasons given are that my story is “To technological”, “To complex”, the last declined any further editing, declaring that “It is far too large an undertaking” she felt “Inexperienced”, most have praised them as readable, entertaining and ‘hot’.

It may be that I should be looking for a beta reader, someone who could offer advice from a female mindset. Once the story is complete is time enough to run the fine tooth comb through for grammar and spelling. I have continued writing and now have a couple of stories finished and yet more near completion, obviously I’d like to free myself of this backlog, get them published and see if they’re worth the fuss I’m making. I’d be asking for a commitment lasting months rather than weeks dealing with a single story, as they tend to run to multiple chapters, my current one is twenty thousand words long and maybe halfway done.

I’m getting very tempted to publish them as is, but then I’d probable want to take them down to re-edit as soon as I saw them in print with the comments. So I sit here in a quandary, is it worth building a backlog whilst searching for the mentor I need, or is publishing and appealing for help in an addendum to the story the way to go?

I’m writing this in the hope that someone will fit the profile and read this and be willing to dip a toe, or that advice proffered might lead me to settle on a course of action.

Thanks.

Frank B.

Maybe it time

Maybe it's time to put them out there and learn from the feedback you get.

Yup

This is very true, but I'm to much of a perfectionist to let it go knowing I can make a better job of it. (At least I think I can with a little advice and maybe a few pointers).

I got news for you

IT CAN ALWAYS BE BETTER!
There is no perfect sentence, no perfect paragraph, no perfect story.
Also, what you think is better, someone else might think it's not as good.
I am retired and now do watercolor painting. I can't believe how many people buy paintings that I wasn't even going to frame.
Take the story you feel is your best work so far and put it out there. Ask for feedback. Then study the feedback. Did they make a legitimate point? If so, keep that in mind and use it for your next story.
How will you ever know what people feel about your writing if you don't publish anything?

Sounds like the perfect excuse to avoid publishing.

No...

As I say my stories won't win prizes. I'm not getting the picture back from it, like an incomplete jigsaw.
They will be published, it's not procrastination, rather it's a dithering as you look down from the high board for the first time.

And just like when you were a kid it's time to take a dive in. Sink or swim, don't know til you try.

If it makes you feel any better look at some of the stuff on here. The standards are not all that high.

"Why am I even here," I ask myself. "Yet here I am."

Time is short, already have stories in the Q, but I ll help as able.

One last word with a coach, make sure i've got things down pat.

AsylumSeeker:

"Time is short,"

I have a five section one that will take you an hour or two at least.

Short Story, Novelllette, Novella, Novel

Quick breakdown, completely unfounded but common enough answers:

Short Story: 1-7.5K word count
Novellette: 7.5K-20K word count
Novalla: 20K-50K word count
Novel: 50K-110K word count
Epic: 100K+ word count

Of course, this differs widely by a few thousand words, but it's what I've found most common.

Virtually all of mine are 20,000+, one is 60,000+, most likely all of my tall tales will be long ones.
