When I Was a Kid....

WIWAK,

Beer, whether bottled or canned, required a church key.

Until very recently, I carried an ancient bottle opener from Schmidt's on my keyring. From the Phila. brewery. I lost my keyring.:(

Oh...and ask a kid today what a church key is. (A what???)

WIWAK I don't recall anyone getting injured (or worse) from parents fighting over the "it" toy each holiday season.

WIWAK, we made LOTS of prank phone calls. The local bowling alley was a prime target, for some reason. We were always calling them up and asking them to page Jack Mehoff, Anita Johnson, etc. Ah, the boredom of youth.

when i was a kid, we actually had physical fitness day in school. no classes were held at all, we'd spend the entire day outside doing physical activities.

WIWAK, there were still seven words you couldn't say on television, and they made George Carlin a star.

Hey! I've raised my kids right...they know what a church key is...:D

WIWAK I could eat anything I wanted.

when i was a kid, recess couldn't come quick enough.... everyone wanted to claim/reclaim their tetherball titles.

WIWAK recess meant full contact, no holds barred "kill the guy with the ball" which is basically Rugby with no rules.
There is no way they would let us play that now.

WIWAK we enjoyed lawn darts.

ROTFLMAO!! I remember that game. :D

I was at the Doc today. I've been having trouble with my shoulder. He asked me "any injuries" and I thought, no...

And he said, you know, it could be something from way back, when you were a kid, playing at recess, and you may have thought nothing of it...
And that made me think of "Kill the guy..."

WIWAK...well a 19yo...going to Canada was only slightly more complicated that going to Ohio, and the drinking age in Canada was 19.

This border stuff sucks.

WIWAK I remember riding my friend's new 'hand brake' bike and running into the back of a car because peddling backwards wouldn't stop me.

WIWAK -

- We'd actually melt lead and pour it into molds to make soldiers
- Another 'hot' toy was Mattel's creepy crawlers which also involved a very hot surface
- Captain Kangaroo and Mr. Greenjeans kept us out of Mom's hair.
- The babysitter drove a VW bug with flower stickers on it.
- In elementary school we had to walk a 1/4 mile to the bus stop
- In Middle school you could still hitch hike safely and Pot was only $20/oz.

WIWAK...we went to McDonald's (the only fast food joint) once a year. As a reward for a job well done.

WIWAK...we had homemade canned vegetables from what we harvested in the summer. And homemade preserves. I'm still trying to reproduce the flavors that my mom and grandma made.

WIWAK..we had double the TV channels of most folks in the US because we got the Canadian stations. A total of 8. Including the PBS station and the one UHF station.

FM Radio was cool.

There were no playoffs in baseball. The American League champion played against the National League Champion.

There was a National Football League and an American Football League.

Nobody I knew had a pure-bred dog. Unless it was the President.

We got our news from Walter Cronkite, and we had no idea what his own political views were.

Men went to the moon and walked on it. And it was exciting. BTW - can anyone name the LAST man to walk on the moon?

The Boston Celtics and UCLA were champs every single year in basketball.

We were sending young men to a far away land to get killed for absolutely no reason whatsoever. Fighting a war that other countries had fought and had lost. Gee, I hope we never do that again.

Only in wasn't called that.

I was just thinking the same thing.

Yep. There are three excellent Chinese restaurants in Fort Erie. I have no clue where there's one in Buffalo. These dining establishments just happened to be located in close proximity to some extremely high class strip clubs. I've heard. Can't affirm myself.
