2011-12 NHL Season

I've soured on the NHL after the Thrashers left town and moved to Winnipeg. The former owners fucked up the franchise so badly that nobody wanted to buy them and keep the team in Atlanta.

You were the only hockey fan in Atlanta, and you refused to support the team.

What did you think would happen?

It's almost hockey time!!:D

I think the count is 22 days away.

:rose:

I used to like hockey, but I now find it kind of boring. They need to bring back more fighting like it had in the 70s and 80s, especially the bench clearing brawls of the 70s. Those were the days. I started to get bored with it last season. Now, I discovered rugby and I truly believe its the greatest sport ever invented.

Me too!!

It's amazing how each fall the excitement begins again, even thoug h most of our favorite teams will wind up with another lousy year. lol;)

Hmmmm. Location NE and Boston won the Cup.

Looks like a good season esp. with the balance in the East.

Too bad about the off-season tragedies though.

I'm inclined to agree with you. Nowdays one only finds that real sort of rough & tumble play in the minor leagues like the CHL. (I pause for a moment to mourn for the Ice Bats)

And I'm happy that Winnepeg has the Jets again. Hopefully they won't suck as badly as the old Jets did.

If you want to see a truly fun sport, find some Austrailian Rules Football (Footy).

Yes, Atlanta.

Center of the Hockey Universe.

They will now play in front of 750 straight sell out's in winterpeg. The whole hockey in the south thing was pretty goofy, the Thrashers were the second team to fail and move out of Atlanta...the Calgary Flames did it back in the day.

Do you ever watch the older games on the NHL channel, they are so boring. No speed, very little hitting. I actually think the best hockey is the current variety.

It is that time of year, my Senators still have a chance.

I would agree 100%. Todays players are bigger, faster and better trained than those of the past. They are also drawn from a wider talent pool which now includes Europe and Russia.

The Senators have a chance part ....... Hmmm. :)

The Flames were profitable and drew very well, but they had no TV contract and their owner lost millions in real estate and had to unload them. Ted Turner originally owned the Thrashers and eventually sold them to a group of arrogant buffoons (some were his relatives) who alienated the fan base and destroyed the franchise. There are several hundred thousand people who moved here from the north. Youth hockey is huge. An NHL team can succeed in Atlanta, but we'll never get another shot.

And FYI: I'm pretty sure the Thrashers drew more fans than the Islanders last year. Shitty franchises don't draw.

A hockey fan once told me that Denver did not deserve another pro team after selling the Colorado Rockies. That team became the NJ Devils.

Even though the little baseball pussies stole the name, Colorado still has two Stanley Cups.

The last year my son played midget house league hockey they out drew the Islanders, they will likely end up in Quebec City eventually.

counting down to the second season in the AHL in oklahoma, 30 days until the home opener!

Also counting down the days to Hockey season. As long as I don't have to watch post-season baseball at the same time.

Got to watch the annual Flyers/Caps Rookie game tonight. Flyers 3, Caps 2. Can't wait for the season to start!

It has, indeed, been a sad summer, especially with the recent plane crash.:rose:

I now live in Nebraska (NE), but grew up back in NYC. I had Rangers' season tickets for 16 seasons until the prices went up way too far.

I'm old enough to remember the fun times of the Emile Francis teams, and even though expansion had begun, we would see every team play during the regular season.

Just found out because of the Flyers/Rangers "outside" game this New Years, HBO is filming both teams leading up to the games.:D I really enjoyed watching this series last year, and the Rangers are one of the teams opening their season in Europe!

I think the game has become faster, and is just as exciting to watch as it's always been for me.

However, I do think there are too many teams, and miss the time when you would know about each player on every team you faced since you saw so much of each team during the year.

Let's go, Rangers!! ;)

Predetors V Panthers,
Sabers V 'Canes,
Sens V Leafs,
All on Monday!
Can I get a Woo-Hoo?

I hear you, sort of. I live in the Toronto media basin so we get lots of games on TV but the team selection is very much toward the Leafs and the NE teams. It is possible that some of the Western teams are never on during the season. The only regular Western is the second Saturday night game, CBC, usually Calgary and another Canadian team.

On the other hand during the lockout year CBC played old classic games from the 50's and 60's. Nice to see the original 6, no helmets but the play was pretty slow and crude compared to today. Best part, to me, was watching Doug Harvey, the Montreal defenceman. Slick or what.

Go Rangers! Our local OHL team is called the Rangers, with the old jerseys to boot. Otherwise I would have to look it up. :D
