Greetings BDSM folk! Just wanted to venture into a discussion on this, if anyone's interested. Obviously, we've all seen the more obvious BDSM moments in old films (i.e. women getting spanked/taming of the shrew type stories). But the other night on TMC I caught something less common.

There's a movie called "The Big Street" with Lucille Ball and Henry Fonda based on a Damon Runyon story. It is not a very good movie and not a good vehicle for either actor. That said, I found it interesting. The story is about a bus boy (Henry Fonda) who is infatuated with a gangster's girlfriend (Lucille Ball). She is imperious and demanding, but does have a generous/good side. Our bus boy is utterly enamored and servile towards her. When a fellow show girl calls this Moll "Your Highness" the busboy thinks it a perfect way to address her, and starts calling her that. Of course, our Moll's boyfriend is awful and when he hits her she falls down some stairs and is crippled. This gives the busboy the chance to take care of her. He waits on her hand and foot, brings her to his home when her money runs out, and is even willing to push her wheelchair to Florida (they get rides) when she yearns for sunshine. He calls her "Your Highness" and with help from his friends, gets her whatever she wishes.

Being an old movie, our disabled lady can't possibly have a useful life and so, of course, she sickens and dies, but not before acknowledging all the busboy has done of her--and even to the end, he tries to give her what she wants, carrying her up to a balcony so she can look out at the sea.

Now back when, this was just one of those weepy women's films--and like most of the characters in the movie, few members of the audience would understand the busboy's devotion to this imperious show girl or recognize it as a D/s relationship. Of course, viewing it from a BDSM perspective, it all makes perfect sense: the busboy has found his perfect mistress, and she's found her perfect sub. Serving her is all he wishes to do, and her accident allows him to do that. Similarly, she's likes giving commands and being in charge and here is someone who will jump to obey. Like secret gay messages in old films, this one clearly has a secret (or not so secret) BDSM undertone/overtone/message.

So, now I'm curious. What old films (intentionally or not) seem clearly BDSM to you even if other viewers might not see it? Which ones do you feel speak to you--even if they're sending their message covertly from the silver screen? Have there been any such old movies that, seeing them now, have made you say, "Whoa! That's was pretty obvious!" ;)

The Quiet Man is one.

LOL

Old woman running beside male protagonist, "Here use this to spank her."

I don't quite remember this perfectly, because I never watched the film again, but In "Carousel" the daughter says she felt herself get hit (by the ghost of the dad, I think) -- "But it didn't feel bad, mother, it felt like love. Do you know what I mean?" and the mom says "Yes, I know what you mean."

Domestic abuse as another way to express love is a theme all through that screenplay.

I'll have to think about it more to see if I can remember movies with BDSM overtones, but I do remember the series M*A*S*H (not the movie) has some D/s in it, although it's not mentioned or seen that much.

Frank Burns has the hots for Margaret to the point he pretty much accepts any kind of attention from her and relishes it. He has been caught by Trapper and Hawkeye painting her toe nails and brushing her hair. He has also asked her if he can wash her feet. There is one scene where she receives a riding crop in the mail and laughs with glee as she swishes it in the air, testing it out.

It's not really written in as a D/s relationship, as much as Frank is just so enamored for her that she seems to like when he grovels so much.

Yes, I watched the show religiously, when it was on in prime time and even watch reruns. I can watch the first few minutes of most any episode and tell you the whole story. I'm addicted to it. I have the monkey on my back. If I could see him, I'm sure he's even dressed in Army greens.

The film Belle de Jour would fit the bill, imo -- from mid to late 60s, based on the older novel...starred Catherine Deneuve..

Belle de jour was written to include the bdsm stuff though wasn't it? A good ish film in the start I thought, though annoyed by the ending.

There was a John Wayne film had the line in it "A stick to beat the lovely lady with sir!"
Not sure if that was the one FurryFury was referring to?

Frank is a sub, Margaret owns him.

Good point - Belle de Jour is overt....

How about The King.....Elvis in the movie Blue Hawaii delivers quite the spanking to ...I forget her name now.....still.....

Jenny Maxwell.

For a quickie insight to that scene, look here, under "Jenny Maxwell."

Lucille Ball was so hot... most of the stuff she did had an s&m edge to it.

This one's not sexy, I just love his drivin' hat. I wish I lived in a time wherein there were specific hats and gloves for driving. That's so classy.

That quote is from "A Quiet Man"

I seem to remember that "Jet Pilot" had a bit os a D/s dynamic to that love story. Bear in mind I saw the film in my early teens and its been tens of years since then. But I seem to remember thinking "fuck, that's hot"

How could I have forgotten-- Frank Sinatra as Nathan Detroit, dropping to his knees for Vivian Blaine as Miss Adelaide...
which is not in the "Sue Me" number, as I could have sworn.

or Brando grovelling before Lady Luck in the gambling scene of the same movie.

Scarlet Street

I once saw a documentary, which I can't recall the title of, about film noir and it showed a short clip, from a film I can't recall, that has an older woman wearing a black spider web dress with chains and webs in the room and a man kneeling and her laughing at him. I think the segment was about a femme fatale type known as a black widow? Anyway I've tried finding the origin of the clip without success.

Kiss of the Spider Woman perhaps?

Old sci-fi will sometimes feature mind control, BDSM-looking outfits, femme fatales, female-dominated planets and the like.

Princess Aura, in the original Flash Gordon serial (a raven-haired, severe-looking beauty) had quite the aire of a domme about her, though there was nothing like that in the actual relationship she wanted with the 'real man' hero (well, he did get tied up now and then, and mind-controlled once). ;)

Ooh, and Diana Rigg as Emma Peel in The Avengers - black leather bodysuits often as not, karate... Heck, Diana Rigg still had it as Mrs Bradely 40 years later.

Not a movie, a song by the Crystals;
