Seperating scenes

When I try to post a story I seperate scense by 4-5 lines.

but when the story story posts, the seperation is gone.

Thoughts?

I use a carriage return at the end of each paragraph. If I want a larger break I use carriage return, then *****, and another carriage return.

That works for me.

If you really mean between paragraphs, then the standard enter key on the key board, twice.

I you really mean a scene break then do as Ogg suggested as that is the standard.

Yes. Stop doing that. The computer program strips out the extra lines.

The usual way, I think, is an extra return * * * * (with spaces between the *) and another extra return.

If you really want extra lines put

<BR />

in each line you want to appear as empty. Note that there are a couple of blank spaces between the "R" and the "/".

But I'd go for the ******** myself.

Hmmm. Why not just <BR>?

Although why go against the Web site style anyway? The style is set so that the readers fully understand what they are reading and the format doesn't become intrusive.

New web standards. Even tags that stand alone like this must have a closing tag to comply, which means a space and a forward slash within the angle brackets so the tag is opened and closed in a single element.

Separating scenes:

When I first got here, I wanted to use french doors but settled for ***** instead.

In a recent story I used * to separate scenes. I'm sure it's not standard, but hey, it's Lit.

I don't know quite how but I got into the habit of using x-x-x-x to separate my scenes. I do think something like that is necessary, though. Otherwise a scene changes and if there's no indicator, it takes a while for me to realize there's been a change.

I've not really had any scene changes in my chapters yet (I made them too short for that - woops) but will have to do this on my next post. Does it only keep one space (i.e. new paragraph) when you edit in the copy/paste window?

What you see while editing in the story text section should be what appears in the preview, but you can of course confirm it in preview.

It's a good idea to read back through the whole story in preview, actually. The change in font, margins, and screen position can make overlooked things jump out at you.

Thanks Darniciad - I'll give it a try and see how it goes. It's somewhat comforting to read it all through in preview as well - nothing like the gut-lurch when you see a glaring embarrassing error on the final post
