Switching several stories to chapters

Greetings:

I created a story "In search for Mrs. Smith" which is ending up becoming a series... six parts so far and at least two more coming.

How do I change the stories to make them part of a series with chapter numbers?

I tried to make a change in the submissions section but it seems like I can only change the URL.

Thank you for your help,

Mitch

You'll have to submit title edits for all of the stories that you wish to make chapters.

In case you don't know Lit's editing process:

  • Start a new submission. Use the same title ( or as much as will fit ) as the original story + something like *EDIT*
  • Select the same category as the original, and fill in description and keywords with placeholders. They don't matter, but must be filled in with something.
  • In the "story text" and "notes" sections, say what you want the title changed to.
  • Preview, and submit.

It wouldn't hurt to add the Lit ID# ( unique number found when you hover your mouse over links such as "moderate comments" or "change url" ) or the friendly URL itselt to your request in the "story text" and "notes" section. As these are unique to the story, it can help eliminate human error.

Edits technically take as long to process as a new story, but I have seen edits go up in as little as a few hours in bulk. So, expect 3-7 days, and smile if it happens more quickly :)

Changes made may not be immediately visible. It may take as much as 24 hours for the changes to appear on the user side of the site. Once the *EDIT* submissions dissapear from your list, wait at least that long before you freak out, thinking the changes haven't taken place as you requested.

When changing titles, you may find the series coding chokes a little. In my case, I have two identical series listed on my page.

This same process can be used to change category, description, and keywords. To change the story text, you use the "notes" section only to describe what you're editing ( you can edit multiple elements in one edit submission ) and use the "story text" section to paste/upload your entire edited text for the story/chapter.

It might also be wise to note in the "Comments" box that you are submitting an edit. The field into which you must type the story title, along with " - EDITED" is too small, and it often clips the word "EDITED".

Guess I should have said, "Say that you're editing the title, and what you want to change it to."

Chalk it up to not fixing my old cut-n-paste macro to reflect the new FURLs. I had that thing tweaked down to the tiniest detail *laugh*

What I do when the title is too long is abbreviate the title, rather than cutting the EDIT notation ( Though I will reduce my normal notation of *EDIT* to simply EDIT ) It's entirely possible that your original title may be at the limits of the field already, and you'll have no choice but to abbreviate, because the submission form won't let you use the exact same title line as a story that already exists in your list.

That's also another reason to add the ID# or FURL to your notes, so there's no doubt about which story/chapter you're talking about when the necessity to abbreviate arises.

Darkniciad and Carlus Magnus,
Thank you very much for your good advice. Somehow I couldn't figure out how to get back to this forum back in August. I got to it accidently today; I'm glad I did as the series has now 9 published chapters and is still growing.
One reader bitched about the lack of chapters... anonymous post of course :)
I tried to change the first chapter title today. I'll be patient and won't freak out right away.
Have a very merry Christmas or whatever Holiday you celebrate.
