How do you feel about a forum regular creating a new username specifically for the purpose of others not knowing who they are? Chickenshit? Perfectly fine? Dishonest?

I made a poll so you can remain anon if you wish. :)

Depends. If it's for the sake of a forum personality attempting to remain anonymous as a writer, so be it. As for one or more alts purposefully intending to hide his/her identity, I say chickenshit with a giant side of gaping vagina.

I don't know, I think if you're a regular there some times is some bias there so harder to get a direct answer.

Then there's situations where maybe both paries are known, if not both participating, and maybe the alt doesn't want that to play a factor.

I've dated people from here who wished to not let our relationship be known. So if I had a question about something that happened, I either sent out PMs to a few people here that I respect, or changed the situation slightly along with the names, but that might change the answers.

Then there's always the chance that the person you are talking about might read it, and some people don't want that.

Usually I've already talked it out as much as possible with the other person, so I don't worry about if they read it, but I've never really been involved with some on who is as involved on these boards as I am (except my ex and that is a whole mess in and of itself)

Alts for trolling are lame. Have the balls to say what you've gotta say in your own name. Alts for when you need advice but don't want people piling on because of who you are or because you--ahem--know that there are people who don't post here but stalk you on the boards  are ok.

At least you know you're stalked. I'm not sure if I am or not.

It depends on what the alt's used for really.

If it's for trolling, that's dumber than a sack of hair. If you can't post what you really think under your real name, you're a coward and I don't respect that AT ALL.

If you feel like you have to do it to get an answer for a super important question and you don't want people to be biased because of your already familiar name, then I guess I can see it although it's much more brave to just ask under your real name and accept the fact that people already know you in a certain light and it's better to accept that.

The moral of the story is try and think before you post, and don't do anything that you're going to be ashamed of later. These kinds of situation would be minimized a lot in those cases.

All in all, what other people do with their internet time is little to none of my business, and as long the things they're doing aren't hurting anyone without their consent, I try and keep my mouth shut. Although I will always bash trolls. :D

I have two alts though, to be candid, I don't think I could use either one ever again because I long ago forgot the password to one and no longer use the email account that was linked to them.

One was about maintaining my online anonymity at a time when I was concerned that it might have been threatened. So I posted under that nic for several months until it was clear that I could return to posting under my regular (and current) nic. The other one has three or four posts and was just for playing a practical joke here, I think with Keroin.

To put up an alt just for the purpose of posting something that would be inconvenient or embarrassing under one's primary ID seems awfully cowardly in general.

Oops... it's not an anonymous poll  But I knew that before I responded, and I don't care whether others like my response or not.

As far as alts go, I have one - I've said that before. I don't much use it any more, though. It was created for a personal purpose (not in any way harmful to posters here, kittens, or unicorns), the purpose was accomplished, and it's therefore largely defunct now. Though I think I resurrected it *once* about six months to a year ago, but I don't remember why. <Sigh> The Alzheimer's is developing apace...

I used to think there was no need for alts, and they were usually created to cause annoyance to others. Some forums on here seem to have about 12 posters each with a zillion alts:rolleyes:

However, I have changed my view point. If you want to ask a question/get advice but your SO reads Lit it could be awkward, then again in that situation you may want to look at the communication between you and your SO.

I may be rambling!

I don't care, and don't understand why anyone does.

Anyone so invested in virtual forum personalities that they get their panties in a twist about this stuff needs to turn off the computer and head outside for a reality check.

Shy! How are you?

Stay north, woman. Crazy things happening in the southern parts of your island, good lord!

I totally agree.

I also don't care.

And I got one because I have a new blog that I'd like to put in my sig, but I don't want to have associated with this username because I've posted previously about my location and other potentially identiying factors. I keep forgetting to post under that name though.

JM! You've been MIA for a while. Miss shy's attendance has been much more impressive as of late.

This could be a fun game. Guess which non-ITW poster is ITW!

What do you blog about, and why do you want a link to the blog attached to your posts?

JM and Wenchie -

I am ok :)
I hope you are too, it's not often you are around either.

The north is a cold strange land.

The riots have spread to the Midlands & north west. Birmingham and Manchester have riots and looting, it seems crazy.

Face book have started a group called 'Stop Rioting and have a cup of tea' lol
Very British.
Hijack end/

What is this word 'outside?'
Is it an American thing?
I don't go outside, I have the net.

ITW, I too am curious about what alt you have and what the blog is about, perhaps you should put it in your sig now you have outed yourself :cattail:

JM is very elusive compared to me, even if I did vanish for over a year.

From my somewhat limited experience, these online forums tend to be a bit of a masquerade ball in general, so I don't think it matters how many masks you wear. Well, as long as the alt is not created/used with explicit malicious intent toward another poster of course, because that is just lame.

I've only posted once under the alt, so that wouldn't be a very fun game. And I want to link to it here to increase readership. Because everyone wants to read an ITW blog! Only they won't know it's an ITW blog...rats, foiled again! Just being silly.

Oh, I blog about...my life. Does that clear it up? I really just wanted to write about everything in my life without having to worry about being discovered. I'm fairly anonymous here, but I have posted some identifying details. And, yes, it's Mister Man approved.

It was a long year! :cattail:

Maybe I'll go post as the alt somewhere else on the forum, and drop some clues for you guys. It could be fun!!!

My name is ITW and I have no life.

Well, I have an alt. It's name is the bdsm_librarian. I consider my alt proof that sometimes alts are necessary.

Ahaha, that's the first thing I've heard that makes facebook sound appealing.

Increase readership so you can sell ads and supplement personal income? Or... increase readership to get random feedback and advice on your life?

You don't exactly have a generic style, woman. The game won't be much fun unless you adopt an alternate persona of sorts. Try to make yourself dull, or conservative, or something.

I still think of you as Gail Collins. (Does she have a blog?) And I still think of her as wearing a little blue gauzy outfit! I swear, you sound just like her.

Although it doesn't really matter if someone uses an alt or not, I prefer posting under the same id. I would like to change my id though. I don't much like it but couldn't think of anything other than the color of a paint at the time I signed up.

Yes, I hear that was also the motivation for On The Road.

I just want to be heard in some way. I'd like readers. I'd like to be published.

I have wanted to be a writer for a long time, but I struggle with it. I think most of what I write is terrible. I struggle with writer's block. I think my struggles are too ordinary. For example - I've been kicking around the idea of a divorce memoir of some sort for forever, and then I read that there are like twenty divorce memoirs coming out. And I'm afraid to walk away from a traditional career.

How's this:

Slavery is awesome! My husband keeps flipping me over and calling me "Mike" during lovemaking! What do do!?

That is such a huge compliment and makes me feel better about having a unique voice. Well, almost unique. You know what I mean.

Yes, I know what you mean. So what if there are other divorce memoirs? I say write your memoir and go for it. Don't pay attention to the efforts of other non-Collins types.

An alt with a husband who calls her 'Mike' is better than yet another person called 'my dirty whore' or 'slut' or some other damn stereotypical thing. So go ahead and make her! Let's have some diversity here!

Shy does have a point, though. A new person with a link to a divorce blog in his/her sig won't be too tough to pick out.
