A novel idea, "reduced sex content!!!"

By novel in this case I mean new and interesting.

In the series I am writing, after setting the scene in the first chapter where there were only 2 sex scenes at the end plus some oral sex in the middle, all the other stories in the series have averaged 5 or more long sex scenes.

I often get comments like, "it kept me hard all the way through."

However in the last two stories, one submitted but yet to come out, and the other I am still working on, the sex content has dropped off considerably.

In chapter 9, which I already submitted, there was only one sex scene as such, the other being a reported sex scene where one of the characters breifly described their experience.

In chapter 10 which I am still writing, no sex is described until 12 Word pages into the chapter, although I can see that I am getting back into my old ways, because there will probably be 4 or 5 sex scenes before the chapter is completed.

My question is:

Do you think I will retain most of my readership despite a lull in sexual activity so to speak, or do you think that after spoiling my readers with tons of sex, they might be put off by these chapters?

Not of course that I would alter what I write to gain or retain readership, basically I let my stories develop organically in my mind, I am just interested in what sort of reaction you think I might expect.

My series is up to 35 and I have had chapters that are 70% story, I have even had a couple with no incest and my readers have continued to vote and comment well.

By chapter 9 you have probably lost most casual readers and are down to your core audience. Most likely they are now following as much for story as sex. I think you will be fine.

You might get some people skim reading for the sex scenes. 12 word pages is quite a lot, if you've got references to past sexual encounters, fantasies etc. in there it should be fine. While I think that the majority will still read because they have invested in the story, but I wouldn't count on them staying around for more than 3 chapters if they're not liking the new direction.

It may depend what category you're posting in. I've posted long stories in Romance and Nonhuman and gone several chapters without sex, and no one has complained.

Twelve word pages will come out to roughly (depending on your font size, etc) two Lit screen pages. Others have posted that a Lit page is about 3400 words, if that helps you estimate.

Generally speaking -- just generally -- I think it depends on the other aspects of your story. If the characters are interesting and the plot is moving along, likely your readers will keep going to see what happens next.

Nice handle!;)

Well as I said I am going back to more sex again at the end of chapter 10, I just think it is nice to mix things up a bit.

And while I do not have many refferences to past sexual encounters, there is always an undercurrent of sexual attraction between the characters.

My two epic novella's are both light on sex. I have several ebooks with no sex or erotica in them at all.

Chapters 1 was about 70% story and chapter 9 about 85%

In chapter 1 I was building the background

50% of chapter 9 was an aside from the main story where there was alot of titilation and sexual tension.

The other 35% of chapter 9 was important preparation and suspense building in the story.

Obviously I think my characters are interesting and that I have some writing ability and thet my plotlines are sufficiently developed, but then I would say that.

As for whether my stories could stand up on their own without the sexual content I can't really answer that, you would have to ask some of my readers.

All I can say is that 8 chapters in this series have come out so far and every one of them has a hot rating.

As long as you keep the story interesting and sexual tension in the air between sex scences, it should turn out great. I love the slow burn of tension leading up to good sex scences. There's probably more enjoyment in that for me, the thrill of the chase and all.
I read loads of stories that just launch into sex scences as soon as possible and then go on to describe the sex in every detail. Mostly it turns out really disgusting and boring. LESS IS MORE I say. Actually I shout it at my computer after wasting time reading shit.

I always have at least one sex scene per chapter, but sometimes I go 4000 to 6000 words before I have a full blown sex scene. I like to set things up properly and flesh out my characters. I think the readers who really like your work will stick with you if it's up to your usual level of quality. People looking for a stroke story are skimming for just the sex scenes already anyway.

You'll be fine, seriously; my current series began with more sex than plot, and people liked it, but over time that inverted and people still like it. If anything, the votes and comments are more positive now that there's less sex. I was worried about one chapter that had no sex at all, but it still got positive feedback. Generally speaking, so long as you keep things fresh and interesting, your readers will support you. They may even appreciate the change in the ebb and flow of your scenes, if it keeps things lively.

I'd suggest keeping at least one sex scene in each chapter, but that's just personal preference. Beyond that, I also figure it's why you're posting on Lit in the first place ;)

I find there are many ways to keep the coals burning without resorting to full-on sex scenes. Innuendo, reminiscing, and roll playing can all be used effectively as a lead-in to the main attraction.
