Can someone tell me what happens to the story file when you upload it and it gets rejected? And deleted stories for that matter? What happens to the file?

I imagine it gets deleted. I don't know why they'd keep it around. But you should have your copy, right?

It's the nature of digital storage that parts of any deleted file still exist until the storage space is needed. "Deleting" a file simply changes the title of the file and marks the space as available for reuse. Unless there is a specific backup function which archives deleted files, eventually deleted files are covered over and disappear forever.

They sit on the sofa with a carton of ice cream and a box of tissues. They watch Lifetime movies with their cats and listen to Oprah interviewing the author of a self-help book. Eventually they pull themselves together, get a new haircut and color, and then go shopping for shoes.

While this is true of current storage, it is also the nature of commercial organisations that they take backups of their files at pre-set intervals, and so a deleted story will still reside in the back-ups, sometimes for years. As I never reuse my backup medium (CD-RW), I still have files from ten years ago!

Persuading a commercial organisation to recover a particular file from back-ups may well be very difficult as they are not usually designed for ease of access to particular files.

To what end is this question asked? In other words have you "lost" a story previously submitted and rejected, or are you just curious so that a rejected story will not reappear without your consent?

I have been asked by a few writers I have edited for if I happened to have saved the original, which I always do as I have more than adequate storage. And I also have Carbonite so those stories are also backed up (not a plug here, just the truth).

Just asking if you can elaborate as to the nature of your question is all. Difficult to answer otherwise.

Yes, I'm wondering because I don't want any of the stories I've had rejected or requested be deleted to reappear or be shared with anyone.

Does the submission still appear in your submission list? ( Private, author only submission list with full stats, not the public side one )

If it's still in your list ( even as rejected) then it's still on the server. However, it's impossible to reach for anyone who doesn't have direct database access ( site owners )

If it's gone from your submission list, then it no longer exists on Lit's servers

However, if it was ever approved and posted, then the odds are that there are copies out there made by visitors. Once that cat's out of the bag, there's no putting it back in.

If you want to remove rejected stories from your list, I should imagine that the standard delete process would work. You'll probably want to mention in the "notes" section that the story you want deleted was rejected.

Okay, well, what happened was, I uploaded a story, and it got rejected. Then, I uploaded another story of the same name to overwrite the orginal. It got rejected as well. I just uploaded a story of the same title with the word "Delete" added and the instruction to delete the story from my submissions. It is not so much the second version that I'm asking about, it's the first version. I'm wondering if when I uploaded the second version, it overwrote the original upload.

Thanks for being so patient with me, sorry if this is confusing.
