Something perhaps a little different from the Amicus...who spent many years as a Disk Jockey, RocknRoll, then Folk, then Classical, and then the love of my life, music wise, Jazz...Just one of hundreds of songs that convey a message, of sorts, and in view of the many Threads on this forum and the AH, concerning love, marriage, commitments, pleasures and problems and the meaning of it all, as we each, in our own way, seek that illusive thing called love....

Carly Simon That's The Way I've Always
Heard It Should Be Lyrics:

My father sits at night with no lights on.
His cigarette glows in the dark.
The living room is still.
I walk by, no remark.
I tiptoe past the master bedroom where,
My mother reads her magazines.
I hear her call, "Sweet dreams,"
But I forget how to dream.

But you say it's time we moved in together,
And raised a family of our own, you and me.
Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be.
You want to marry me, we'll marry.

My friends from college, they're all married now.
They have their houses and their lawns.
They have their silent noons,
Tearful nights, angry dawns.
Their children hate them for the things they're not.
They hate themselves for what they are.
And yet they drink, they laugh,
Close the wound, hide the scar.

But you say it's time we moved in together,
And raised a family of our own, you and me.

Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be.
You want to marry me, we'll marry.

You say that we can keep our love alive.
Babe, all I know is what I see.
The couples cling and claw,
And drown in love's debris.
You say we'll soar like two birds,
Through the clouds,
But soon you'll cage me on your shelf.
I'll never learn to be just me first, by myself.

Well O.K., it's time we moved in together,
And raised a family of our own, you and me.
Well, that's the way I've always heard it should be.
You want to marry me, we'll marry.
(Marry.)

What are your memories of life at home with your parents and your wishes, desires and dreams of your own life as a father, a mother, a family...written and performed in the 70's earlier than many here, I thought perhaps a glimpse of the past might enlighten you to an earlier time with similar thoughts and feeling and you might take a moment to express your memories and feelings...

There was a lovely era of musical creation and innovation, with Carly Simon, Judy Collins, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Carol King, and others, that , I think, were unique and never to be repeated as music has gone in a different direction.

Your thoughts perhaps?

My small offering to thoughts beneath thoughts and feelings...ah...and this is from a playlist I created for my youngest daughter who seems to have an affinity for music of that era...for reasons unbeknownst to me...

Something perhaps a little different from the Amicus...

I predicted you'd be the next member to start talking about yourself in the third person.

Just sayin'.

Oh - and this is too good not to re-post:

Affluent blacks choose white wives, so the dominant gene will eventually will out, and legitimate homosexuals don't reproduce, so they will naturally fade into a footnote of history. But the cultural changes effected by both have been influential through really bad Rap music and poor food and the Oscar Wilde's of the world, seeing things from both sides now (song), has diminished the values of both and added nothing but mediocrity, well, Elton John may be an exception to the rule.

My favorite karaoke singer could crush this song better than Carly ever did, which says a lot since Carly was perfect for this song.

She's not particularly talented or good-looking. What she is, however, is the offspring of one of the wealthiest, best-connected families in the country (at the time), and sometimes that's enough.

It was Junior high for me when that song came out and it was so very typical of chain link fenced suburbia. So very unhappy and so ignorantly unaware...

Our generation, at least for myself, learned a lot from watching them...

wow . Joanie Pallato . I played in a big band where she was one of the vocalists decades ago...she was very pretty and sang great

Interesting collection of comments, I guess that is why there are many forms of music and many performers in an open society, eh?

I used to love Carly's songs almost as much as the person who introduced me to them.

There was a period of time in music, and I won't put a time on it, but songwriters and singers seemed to be introspective and nostalgic about the real issues of life, love and relationships...refer to the OP for a partial list...Joni Mitchell, Carol King, many more...that era and that genre has been given special play on satellite music channels...a home of its own....regardless of the detractors.....but...I do wonder why they diss her music so?
