Oh to be in England now the Sluts are out!

Heh. there's been a lot of discussion about calling these demonstrations "slutwalks" at all, because of the absolute probability that ironic hipsters would jump on the word and consider this permission to use it just as it has always been used.

Personally, I don't see how it can possibly be reclaimed. It's a term of denigration, and never will be anything else.

The walks themselves, however... Gorgeous!

Wonder if Vana was there with the camera and/or thigh highs.

Dear Ladies, as long as you hang them out, I will check them out. And I agree--non-con is for fiction. But do say "Yes" occasionally--keeps the chappy happy, don'tcha know?

Hey look a plot bunny for the idiots over in the non con section! So a girl in the slut walk gets separated and ends up in a dark alley and gets raped repeatedly! I'd say she eventually likes it but then that would take the fun away for the rapists in training out there.

If it's a peaceful demonstration, then I'm all for it. Why shouldn't sluts (whether they choose to call themselves that or not) be entitled to publicly express their views?

I don't see what the big deal is.

I want to live in a world where "slut" isn't a pejorative at all anymore. It's ridiculous that we have a double-standard between males and females regarding promiscuity.

I also want to live in a world where rape is prosecuted like the serious crime it really is, and where the bailiff is required to punch lawyers & witnesses in the face whenever they try to blame the victim.

We need a new word entirely. "Slut" has always had a bad meaning.

It started out meaning a woman who didn't keep her house clean.

Then for a while it meant the woman who cleaned someone's house. Go figure.

It has never meant "a woman who of her own will chooses how to have sex, when and with whom-- and how often," and it is never going to. Too many people continue to use it to mean "a woman who has no sexual autonomy." You just can't reeducate enough people.

Good luck with that one.

I've been using it way too much, I typically use the term "adventurous" in mixed company, occasionally, "experienced".

"An experienced woman".

Experience me baby!

And I think, you need a better word for "non-con", because non-con is what those girls _really_ are: non-conservative. :D

In German language, slut ("Schlampe") means anybody who doesn't keep his house clean.

And it means anybody who does something in a sloppy way.

Women in Germany, who call theirselves "sluts" differs only in one thing from "girls". Both see theirselves as "women who of her own will chooses how to have sex, when and with whom-- and how often" but the slut adds "...and in what clothes ever", so a "slut walk" in Germany would be in general a demonstration of "the right to suit yourself in a bad taste".....if we will ever love it, depends on the music that will played on this.

I suppose promiscous would work but still has a negative connotation. Maybe just plain old "Fun".

A slut to me is just a chick that likes sex and objectification/humiliation, and/or, is confident enough to have a sense of humor about being a "slut", and I don't think it's synonymous with promiscuity necessarily, I think it has more to do with letting the walls down and allowing yourself to get into it - celebrating your sexuality - "shameless" is one of the more amusing variations, I had a friend used to always say: "where are all the shameless women at"? Lol.

But the word is bandied about so much, with so many different meanings, it's basically meaningless, just another thing for cynical assholes to snark about.

In this case, the meaning is pretty clear, dressing "slutty", means dressing in a sexually provocative manner - been in a debate about it on another site, and 80% of rapes are committed by somebody who knows you and you're in contact with on a semi-daily basis, stranger rape is only 20%, most of those are a stalkers who choose their victim in advance - a lot of the rest is simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and in almost none of these cases is what you happen to be wearing a significant factor.

There is always a tendency to blame the victim, especially in this; men's deepest fear is that all women, including their wives and mothers, are sluts - or would be if they could get away with it, i.e., paternity assurance. This goes back a long way, and encompasses birth control as well, i.e., the rights insistence that sex education will make women promiscuous.

Taken to it's logical extreme, you have Sharia, Chador, and "honor" murder, or their Western equivalents.

I think for women, it's not about sexuality at all, it's about being free from all the sexual politics.

Sounds just about right...but what if she throws her assailant to the ground, rips off his pants, and stuffs his now-flacid "man"hood in her "womanhood." He screams in fear, and she slaps him, demanding he "get hard or get hurt." He finds he likes the thrill of being mounted and hit, and he eventually gets stiff. She finishes, and climbs off, leaving him huddled in the alley, sobbing softly as he tries to ease his aching, unerupted organ?

This is EXACTLY the experience I have had with women I have known who call themselves "slut." It seems to be a bit more variable a term than I had realized, though. I guess this is an example of listening to what people mean being more important than listening to what they say.

There's also the very important difference between calling yourself a slut when and where you choose to do so-- and being called a slut by men you don't know-- for instance, the Toronto police chief.

My understanding is that this started in Canada after a policeman told a group of students that women shouldn't dress like "sluts" if they didn't want to get sexually assaulted.

Putting aside for a moment the meaning of the word "slut", the protest walks are really about ending violence against women, sexual violence in particular.

Coming at a time when two New York city cops were just acquitted of rape charges, despite "overwhelming evidence" against the accused...

http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2011/05/28/exclusive-hundreds-protest-nypd-rape-verdict-in-new-york-city/

...and the current charges against Dominique Strauss-Kahn, I think these protest walks are timely, if not long overdue.

If protesting while wearing provocative clothing (which displays no more skin than is visible at any beach or swimming pool) draws more attention to the cause, so be it.

As for the word "slut", my dictionary tells me it means a slovenly, unkempt women...a slattern. It also defines a slattern as a "sluttish woman".

Popular meaning seems to be a woman who either dresses provocatively or is sexually liberal (or both). But what about men who dress up and/or are sexually liberal? The double standard has got to go. "Slut Walks", by any other name still are about ending sexual violence against women.

This. I think the groundswell movement is a middle-finger response to this external event, not something spontaneously busting out from inside these woman on the need to establish slutdom.

I think more "tacky" than "slut."

Isn't the (maddening to women) real issue that most men wouldn't bother to design it at all?

Oh, I don’t think she meant men sat around and conspired, and if she did, I don’t agree with her. I believe it was rather to say, “not even if the most cynical among men tried, could they come up with this stuff!”

In other words, it was to say this kind of feminism challenges nothing at best and undermines itself at worst.

Hmmm intriguing concept. However, the problem there is most of the Non con audience is men and that would be insulting to their manhood! Every one knows a "real" man can rape and degrade any woman he wants too! Or at least that's what the big fat virgin slob living in his mom's basement fantasizing about hurting women thinks anyway.

Sorry if I am being subtle about my feelings here. I will try to be more direct next time;) last post on the topic I promise!

I understood your aim, and mine was precisely to turn the tables on the middle-aged boys in their Mom's basements by giving them a real "slut."
