According to the thread title the question is whether the state should collect taxes and spend some of the money to provide a safety net to the indigent.

What? The rich-poor gap in America is growing faster than any industrialized nation. The one thing you do NOT need to worry about is rich and poor being forced into the middle together. The middle class is shrinking.

During the Bush administration the middle class was shrinking also...because so many middle class people were moving up into the "wealthy" category. All that's changed now with so many ObamaLayoffs amd shrinking wealth.
