Story

Apparently, people are upset that this guy was invited to the White House because of some controversial lyrics.

Well, I am upset too but not because of the lyrics. I'm upset because they would invite a rapper to a poetry workshop  I mean, that would be like inviting a kazoo player to play Mozart:rolleyes:

Have you ever really listened to his lyrics? Or is it easier to stereotype and say because he is a rapper, he doesnt deserve to go to a poetry reading

 What? Rap is lyric poetry. Perfectly good poetry, some it fine poetry.

What Rap is not, is music.

Karl Rove is just trying to whip old white people into a frenzy.

Fuck him.

I wouldn't dismiss that as an effective tactic for at least the next two election cycles.

After that . . . generational attrition, cultural change. (There will still be old people but they won't be the kind of angry white old people we have now.)

They've been saying that for 200 years.

1) No, they haven't.

2) If they had said it, they would have been right. The culture, including the political culture, of geriatrics is constantly changing, for generational reasons. (Guess what the next American generation to enter retirement will be? BOOMERS! The common rooms of every retirement home in Florida will be hung with headshop posters and tie-dye, the air thick with "incense," Jimi Hendrix on the PA system . . . :D )

3) There was never a geriatric vote that mattered before the late 20th Century. Not enough people lived that long.

Those boomers are in charge now and you're still bitching about the old white guys. Just like they used to and their parents and their grandparents.
And number 3 is just dumb.

It's all about art and free speech.

I have no problem with Common performing as invited. Why not? Werds is werds folks; sticks 'n' the Stones, etc.

Maybe, later this Spring, the Obamas will have an Art of the 20th Century event to raise funds for national social programs. Yeah! There's the ticket! Artists of the 20th Century.... Hmmmmm......

I think they will include these in the show:

It's junk food for the mind, raise your standards. Do you want to read verses that are both intricate and eloquent? Try Amy Newman. This is light years more imaginative and substantiative than rap.

Almost any one of you here could, with a little prompting, write a passable verse for a pop song.

I'd like to see a single one of you write a decent rap lyric.

Blackalicious - A to G

[Sampled woman's voice] We're going to learn to hear words with vowel "A" sound....Listen with care

I be the analog arsonist, aimin at your arteries
All-seeing abstract, analyze everything
Adding on, absolutely abolishing
Average amateurs' arsenal - just astonishing

[Sampled woman's voice] Next, we'll learn words that begin with letter "B"

I be the big, bad body rockin Bombay to boulevard bully back
Better bring a bomb to the battlefield
Bloody black beats bringing bottoms that boom
Basically build barriers bewildering buffoons

[Sampled woman's voice] Listen now to words that begin with letter "C"

Crazy character, constantly creating conconctions
Catalyst, a cannabalistic rhymes conqueror
Correctly connecting, craniums crumble down
Consistent capacity

[Sampled woman's voice] Next we'll hear words that start with letter "D"

Done did that done did this diddle don
Domination don't dignify diction
Doin' it deep down dialect daring
Doomsday dut devastate during the duration

[Sampled woman's voice] Listen to our song for vowel "E"

Extraterrestrial electrical, effortless
Eons of energy, everyone affected
Efficiently epitomize excellent
Extravagant elevate where the essence is

Lauryn Hill - from 'Ready or Not'

"So while you're imitating Al Capone,
I'll be Nina Simone,
And defacating on your microphone"

It’s The Legend of Zelda and it’s really rad,
Those creatures from Gannon are pretty bad.
Octoroks, Tektites, and Leevers too,
But with your help our hero pulls through!
Yeah, go like that! Awesome, intense!

Eminem - from 'What's the Difference'

"What's the difference between us?
We could start at the penis"

Maxi Jazz - from 'Salva Mea'

"Like a crowd in my head, so loud.
I wonder what it's like to be dead, I hope it's quiet.
Noise in my head like a riot.
Any remedy you have for me, I'll try it."

André 3000 - from 'Millionaire' (Kelis)

"Where there is cheese there are rats,
Where there are rats there are cats,
Where ever there are cats there are dogs.
If you got the dogs you got bitches.
Bitches always out to put their paws on your riches."

Rakim - from 'Follow The Leader'

"I'm everlastin, I can go on for days and days
With rhyme displays that engrave deep as X-rays
I can take a phrase that's rarely heard, FLIP IT
Now it's a daily word "

Kanye West - Crack Music

Crack raised the murder rate in DC and Maryland
We invested in that it's like we got Merrill-Lynched
And we been hangin' from the same tree ever since
