Sorry -- I know this would get buried in the GB, not to mention it's scary over there.

I picked up a new MP3 player today, from Polaroid (of all places). It's a PMP431-4 4GB player, and does music, video and pics. Documentation, as usual these days, is minimal. It's working fine but I have a feeling this must be an off-brand, or and off-product, as there's not much out there about it. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with it, and whether they new what pic formats it might support. I'll just play with it but any opinions would be welcome.

Oh, and here's a good one -- the menu has an option for "ebook," which turns out to mean "can display text files." Yeah, that's helpful.

This item must be a dark horse for Polaroid as they don't even list it on their website.

There might be a help file on there somewhere, just keep poking around.

Zeb, I know. I was rolling my eyes at it when I went looking on the Polaroid site. I finally found some links that allowed me to trace the support to Southern Telecom, or something like that, and they listed some Polaroid models, although not this one.

FWIW, it seems to work pretty well. I'm no audiophile, so the sound is ok to me. And what I really wanted it for was to hook up to my alarm clock, so I can play music to go to sleep. My old MP3 player seems to be draining (single) AAA batteries at a ridiculous rate.

I have one that is so old, but can hold about 30 songs...I use it when I go for my walks...it's good enough for me and it's about the size of a flash drive.

My old one holds about 1 GB worth, which was plenty for me, and is smaller than the palm of my hand, but bigger than many models out today. The reason I picked the one today was that it was bigger. It's also an iPod Touch wannabe, I think, in many respects.

But, the more gadgets the more power is required. The more power required, the faster it is used up. I'll stick with mine that runs for a month on one AAA battery, thank you very much. :D

Oh, very true. Now, my other one wouldn't have lasted a month on a AAA, but it should have lasted at least a week (I would play an album at night while going to sleep, then it would auto off). So this one has its own rechargeable battery. I actually wouldn't mind an iPod or Shuffle or Nano but they're too much right now.

Really the only time I listen to music is when I take my walk or when I'm writing. And when I'm writing, I have the biggest most sophisticated music player at my finger tips. :D

After sleeping on it, I've decided to return the thing. My hub pointed out the problem with the batteries was likely just a battery thing and not something wrong with the unit, which was working fine. So I'm going to delete everything and take it back. This was $50 and there are cheaper units if I decide I do want to replace the one I have.

Thanks for the help though.

No problem. The little mp3 player I have cost like $10 five or six years ago. :D

Yeah, yeah, I'm a cheap bastard. ;)

"Thrifty," not cheap. ;) Well I think I'll get my mom's old MP3 player. She has an iPod Touch and uses that for music mostly, I think. She had an iPod Nano as well but not sure if she still uses that. Not sure how much my current one was; like I said, it's six or seven years old.

DRM on Apple products suck.. get rid of that so it doesnt delete your music if you port it to another computer.

Thanks for the warning. Don't know what I'd get the nano, though, she may have another one older than that. Still, if it's free, I won't complain.
