I'm not 100% sure what you refer to as a debacle, Trump being proven wrong or Trump being stupid enough to bring up the birther thing in the first place. It doesn't matter, Trump is as shady a character as they come, besides being a total asshole. He knows better than anyone that he can't win, the media would chew his ass up whole as soon as he threw his rug in the ring, and he knows it. He has never had any intention at all of running, but it's sure good for ratings. That's what The Donald cares about, not you, not me, not birth certificates.

Trump is connecting with people because he has the balls to ask tough questions and say things that people are concerned about. He's an excellent communicator. Obama is an excellent bullshit artist. If the two of them faced each other in a REAL debate, Trump would mop the floor with him.

I agree. Trump will stay in as long as the costs of "running" don't run higher than profits from his show, which is mainly advertisement for his "brand."
As far as Newt and Palin go, they won't actually run either. I think they're both in it to boost their speaking fees and book advances.
I saw a bumper sticker here in West Texas the other day - it was a pig wearing lipstick and "Palin 2012 - You betcha!" The sad thing is, in this neck of the woods I really can't tell if the car belonged to a Palin supporter or by someone who think she's a joke...
