Editing not for Lit

Hey ya'll,

This post is to cover a variety of questions I have been getting from writers about editing their stories.

1. ALL editing that comes through this site is FREE always. Providing it is PUBLISHED on this site. I have had a few writers use this site for editing purposes for stories they did not publish here but at other sites. I feel this is dishonest to both me and this site.

I am a professional writer and do not have to offer my services free of charge but I do because I enjoy assisting other authors. I make an attempt for a fast turn around from the time I receive the material to completion and sending it back to the author. Thus I feel being used for editing that is not for Lit is underhanded.

2. I have received MANY requests for editing on material to be professionally published. MOST are not exceptionally long works and can be done quickly. However, these requests are getting more extensive and thus I need to begin a more structured method of dealing with them.

First, I will accept ALL submissions - I turn none away. However, this off site service will no longer be free. I will institute a low cost editing service so that I am not swamped in submissions that are NOT for Lit site. LIT stories will always take priority! Meaning they will be completed first, then off site requests will be handled.

For details on these fees and expected completion dates please contact me via email. Paypal will be accepted for this and ALL of these type editing tasks are pay in advance - NON REFUNDABLE. The price will be based on length of the story submitted but not more than $10 MAX.

3. For those writers seeking a low cost publisher I know many, but deal with only one that I am very pleased with. I am happy to assist any writer get established with this publisher and any questions they have. It is a print on demand publisher, thus the ONLY cost to the writer is that of the proof copy. They have far exceeded typical customer service in issues I have had with my proof copy and to me this says they are very dedicated in assisting writers succeed in a tough market.

4. I have created an IRC chat room where adult authors can meet, talk, ask questions and more. This was done because there are many who come to me with similar questions. I have moderators in this room who are very helpful and willing to do what they can. Everyone is invited to visit it. You can find the instructions of how to get there on my blog. I love what I do for ya'll do not forget that. I have edited stories from some VERY VERY talented writers and look forward to editing more. Do not mistake this post as a spew it's not meant to be that way. I just needed to address to certain writers that using this site to obtain free editing services will no longer be tolerated. Lit is the ONLY site I edit for free of charge and it really ticks me off when a writer uses this site to get free services that do not benefit this site.

It may be useful for readers to know that one should never pay anyone for editing if they have no professional experience. Professional experience constitutes time working for a legitimate publisher or agent, and/or as well as various qualifications and training programs. (In fact even a published author may not be a good editor -- they may not have knowledge about submissions, in-house preferences or market trends).

Always, always check an editor's credentials before giving them your money. Ask to speak directly with their previous clients, if that is possible. Always check any work of theirs that is in the public domain -- if there are mistakes then they speak for themselves.

I agree. Plus, a person's post says a lot about them. If he or she cannot write a decent post, how can he or she catch the errors in another person's story?

I am working on an outside piece and so it's not appropriate for the Lit editors, but I'm having a hard time finding them outside this space, too. I just try searching for terms like novel editing, editorial services, etc, but many don't do erotica and even the couple that do, it's a once-in-awhile-thing for them. I'm a little nervous about sending my erotic romance to someone who doesn't normally read erotica because I think it'll be a bit of a shocker and therefore not as useful of a review.

Check around on the sites of erotica publishers. Some of them list editorial staff. Or contact erotica publishers directly and ask for editor recommendations. You'll need to be prepared to pay. $1 per 100 words is a ballpark rate.

I sent him a PM. I am willing to edit, for a small amount as all I have is experience, not book-knowledge.

Editing on Lit etc is not experience as a professional editor. Look around for an internship if that is what you'd like to be.

Related question: would it be considered a misuse of literotica (either officially or just bad form) to post a request for beta readers on here or solicit them - so long as I specify that this is NOT a literotica project?

I did this for turner28 but she rather specified that she was open to that. I'm wondering if I just put a post out there on the boards or PMed a few people, if that would be okay.

Depends on how well written it is, and your patience. You might even bag yourself an editor.
