Ok, I confess that I've just pinched this thread from the BDSM Cafe but it has inspired some beautiful and thought provoking responses over there so I'm interested to see what you guys write.

What do you believe in? What do you put faith in to get you through shitty days, weeks, months or even years?

This is the quote that kicked off this thread in BDSM.

"Well, I believe in the soul... the cock...the pussy... the small of a woman's back... the hangin' curveball... high fiber... good scotch... that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent overrated crap... I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a Constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days. Goodnight."

~Crash Davis

Maybe you have a specific faith or religion, maybe you don't. But all of us have to have faith in something, certain inalienable truths.

So what are yours?

This being SRPs, points will be awarded for pretty wordyness. :rose:

I believe~

that pain is a needful thing and can help to heal a broken heart.

that miracles happen far more than people want to admit.

that love knows no racial, gender or cultural bias but humans fuck it up.

that a little child shall lead them.

that words are as pure as pictures.

that I am blessed.

that no religion is completely correct so you should follow which ever one gives you hope.

that one day we will see a cure for AIDS.

that nothing is as beautiful as a sunrise.

(The smartass in me wants to quote the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, but I will restrain myself)

I believe:

That words will always have more power than vision, and if I had to choose, I would be blind rather than deaf.

That laughter is often the best medicine.

That sometimes the absence of words is more powerful than anything.

That like my sig says: "They say beauty is only skin deep, but I'm pretty sure it starts on the inside and works its way out."

That even in the hearts of the most desolate, there is a spark of light, because without it life would cease to exist entirely.

That love knows no bounds.

That someday soon, I'll figure out just what the hell to do with this life I've been given.

That faith alone is enough for some, but I will always require proof.

That in the end, nobody gets out alive.

Money doesn't make the world go round. But it certainly greases the gears.
BOOBIES make the world go round. They also make it stop like an emergency brake.

Being a student of science, the sterotype would be that I have no faith, that I could never believe in a God. However, I am part of the group of scientists, at least one half of scientists, that believe in a God of some sort. I personally believe in the Christian God, the trinity. I have believed as such for my entire life, believing at a very young age for myself that it is the truth. It has given me strength and developed my values.

I believe that God set the universe into motion. He laid down the laws of nature to govern the growth and development of everything that exists. Evolution was the method he used to form humans, and every animal. I believe that Genesis is not literal. I study the world every day and I grow in amazement with the complexity and simplicity of so many things. The more I understand what is going on, the stronger my faith grows. I believe that no amount of random events could have possibly come together to cause what exists today. The universe itself if proof to me that God exists.

I believe also in the fact that God came to Earth as Jesus and died on the cross to save us from our sins. He also helped heal the broken connection between man and God so that we can now live in a relationship with Him. There are many other aspects to my faith that I won't bother discussing at this point.

I believe:

That words, penned or spoken, are powerful, powerful things.

That Hope is our greatest ally and our greatest downfall.

That love can transcend anything.

That while science can prove much, some things require faith.

That there is a price to be paid for everything.

That if you mess with the Cosmos, it doesn’t hesitate to mess back with you.

That we are our own worst enemy.

That it's not how we fuck up, but all about how we recover.

I believe that the pen is not mightier than the sword, but a whole lot of big guys with machine guns is mightier than the sword, and what do you know they're told who to shoot by a guy with a pen...so disregard this statement.

I believe humor and a good nature salves even the most belligerant soul.

I believe in the goodness of humanity as individuals, unfortunately I also believe in the stupidity of humanity as a collective.

I believe in the power of an individual to change the world for negative or positive ends (i.e. Lee Harvey Oswald and Martin Luther King Jr.) in fact the individual is the only thing that ever has changed the world.

I believe that when you try to do good by focusing on the larger picture as a whole at the expense of the smaller pictures (the individual cases), you fuck things up royally, because the larger picture is a mosaic of all the smaller pictures. (i.e. healthcare)

and lastly and most importantly I believe in love.

I believe that this world is all we get, so we damn well better do it right.

I believe in apologizing. Sincerely, and as soon as possible.

I believe that people tend to be exactly as smart as they are treated.

I believe in trying to do the right thing, no matter how angry you are.

I believe in really good cookies.

I believe that a day can be made or broken with a smile, or a thank you. Conversely, I believe people snap and become mass murderers because they got splashed by a passing car.

I believe in sharing secrets.

I believe that nerd, geek, and kink are all synonyms for 'fun'

I believe in letting your friends help you, and that you shouldn't think they don't want to hear your problems. Thats the definition of 'friend'.

I believe we owe it to everyone, not to provide things, but to provide opportunity.

I believe in showers.

I believe in covering your ass while hoping for help.

I believe in short skirts and high heels.

I believe in not shutting up, if you know you are right.

I believe in monsters.

I believe in language and all its power.

I believe in the golden rule.

I believe that we can make things better.

That we should, and need to make things better.

I believe that everyone deserves to be happy, however they may define it.

I believe if it feels good, do it.
I believe if it DOESN'T, don't. Or find a way to make it stop.

I believe I need to uphold my own beliefs more often.

I believe that humor helps almost every pain and fear. Not all of them.

I believe there are far too many people in this world who need to rethink the way they are to others.

I believe you can love too much and care too little. It's possible. And is frustrating as hell.

I believe that which doesn't kill me makes me stronger

I believe in tolerance, in treating others as I would like to be treated

I believe that life is what you make it, and that you make your own luck - I am captain of my ship, and I am master of my fate

I believe that you leave the past where it belongs, in the past; that you are who you are, because of your collection of experiences, but only you can determine who you will be in the future.

I believe that when necessary, have a good cry, pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get on with it, learn from your experience. No matter how negative something is, there is always something to be learned from it.

I believe that you have only one shot at life, and you better make it good - we are each responsible for our own happiness.

I believe that there is solace to be found in the written word, in songs, in poetry, and that good humor is its own reward.

"The moving finger writes, and having writ,
moves on: Nor all thy piety nor wit,
Shall lure it back to cancel half a line of it,
Nor all thy tears wash out one word of it"

I believe in the overwhelming feeling of love. The head-over-heels-over-head sensation that makes it feel like you're tumbling through an open ocean with nothing to hold onto but that love.

I believe that love should be all-consuming, and passionate, and worthwhile. It shouldn't require you to change, and it shouldn't suggest that there is something wrong with you.

Love should make your heart sing, it should make you feel like you could just throw your arms out and fly high in the sky on the wings of your euphoria.

I believe that love is about compromises. And trust. And honesty.
I believe that love is understanding that sometimes it's not always about getting what you want but knowing how to go after what you need.

I believe that a parents love for their children should be unconditional. It should fill your heart to bursting every time you see them smile at you, or they wrap their little arms around your neck and tell you how much they love you.

I believe that every person should make a go at following your dreams. You shouldn't ever give up because you 'can't do it' and you shouldn't ever stop trying. Our dreams are what make us happy, our dreams are what make us feel self-satisfied and self-assured when we accomplish them.

I believe that you should never, ever be ashamed to tell somebody that you love them. Or to profess it to the people around you, and around them. It shouldn't be a secret - love. It's something to be cherished and honored and embraced.

I believe in significant others that make every day special and not just Valentine's Day or an anniversary. I believe in letting your significant know that you love them, that you think they're special, that the flame is still burning - on days other than when it seems 'required' to do so.

I believe in the passion of writing and the way my heart beats and I get breathless just to write something when the opportunity comes along. I believe that I was meant to write. And I believe that I will.

I believe that little boys and little girls alike should be able to play in dirt and with dolls if that's what they want.

I believe in The Goddess and Her Consort.

I believe in the power of Mother Nature.

I believe in my Muse and His special way of coaxing the words from me.

And I believe in myself.

But most of all...

I believe in love.

( Probably because I'm a hopeless romantic at heart. ;) )

Being a computer scientist, atheist and very likely the biggest misanthrope in all Europe, this is easy.

I believe (in no specific order) ...
  • in the absolute power and correctness of science
  • in the inevitable self-destruction of mankind (if we don't really get our act together in, say, the next 20 years)
  • that all current forms of economy and government are doomed to fail
  • that love is only an illusion
  • that there is no omnipotent and -scient superhuman entity watching us and keeping record of our "sins"
  • that the concept of religion is inherently flawed and only an escapism

Well, for me "believe" is the wrong word. I should have rather said something along the lines of "I consider the following statements correct and support them", but I wanted to go along with the thread's title... ;)

Religion is a set of ideals and personal beliefs. It doesn't necessarily refer to a god or gods. And you give mankind too much credit. I give us five, maybe ten years if we don't smarten up and stop trying to blow each other up over what gods we worship.

I really...really...don't think that the point of this thread was to debate anything.

Thank you for sharing this Josh! I am no student of science, but like you am educated and find each discovery of how the world works a reinforcement rather than a negation of my faith.

As to what I believe - I could not have put it better.
I hope you'll forgive me for using this quotation to contribute to the thread.

Bingo.

Look, I freely admit that all my lounge threads are cursed and destined to descend into pissing contests. But can this please not be one of those threads? There is just no point debating atheism and religion here. All of us have enough people in our real lives who don't share our core beliefs, whether you're religious or not. Do we really need to bring that debate here to a recreational SRP sub-forum?

Yes, a lot of people have a strong belief in a God or Gods and the professed prophets/offspring of those Gods. They put their faith in an organised religion.

A lot of people are agnostic and consider themselves spiritually minded in whatever way that manifests in their life and choices.

A lot of people are total atheists and put their faith in scientific discovery and theory. They view the upholding of morals as social Darwinism, the difference between us and apes.

And guess what? That's all just fine and dandy.

Can we please leave the debate there and allow this to be an inspirational and heart-warming thread?

Of course we're all going to have differences of belief and opinion. Look for example, at how many separate denominations there are just within Christian faith. But despite those differences, in the liberated west we thrive as free thinkers and most of us have pretty much the same basic tenets regarding morality and what as a society we should outlaw and punish.

So for all our differences, we can function as a democratic society and live alongside one another peacefully, most of the time. And I think that's great.

I'm going to have to say at this point in time, I believe in myself. I have delivered myself from some bloody battles, cursed, beaten, and bruised the only existence I have, but in the end, I was the one that was there. A lone scared soul, so I picked myself up, dusted myself off and went back for more. Belief in yourself is an amazing thing...when you take the time to tell yourself "you have purpose here, don't give up", the demons that threaten to tear you apart seek refuge and leave you with a renewed sense of confidence and capability.

I beleive we should try to follow this, but somehow I doubt we'll succeed at it for long.

Sorry, FM, your threads just seem to attract controversy for some reason.:(

I believe sometimes the internet makes people drop a crucial brain to mouth (or in this case typing fingers) filter, so they say things they wouldn't say to someone face to face, and that what they say is often harsh things aimed at hurting that someone.

Was stuck wondering what post 3'333 should say.

Believe
Until
Mutual
Passion
Ends in
Dreams.

I believe in people.

Deep down, we want things to be better, but we're stuck feeling powerless and alone. "What can I do?"

If all those people who thought that same thing banded together, they'd be unstoppable. The protests in Hong Kong, Greta Thunberg, etc, all started because one person had finally had enough and decided, "Fuck this, the world SHOULD be different."
