Maybe because in mythology goddesses (esp. Aphrodite, Artemis, etc if we are talking Greek) are associated with youthful beauty and grace, whereas the male gods are associated with wrath and wars etc?

I suppose one can try... In his blue eyes I saw the ocean, calm, confident, with a thousand undercurrents that only I could see, and I longed to tread in those dangerous waters. He was my god, my Poseidon, I reached out to him, praying as his faithful priestess, and felt his anger, his desire rise as a wall of water... In a minute I was swept away. My world was flooded by his presence.

There, I've done my god worshipping of the day.

I actually brought the question up in one of those circles, and someone pointed out that it is used in some stories, but it's meant to paint the giant in a negative and egotistical light and make him seem like more of a nutcase, whereas the use of goddess in the same kinds of stories with the gender roles reversed are used in a positive (albeit sometimes misogynistic) way.

For me it's less of a mythological reference, and more of a devotional act. It's a genuine appreciation of the god that is in my presence.

There are all various historical / cultural influences that I can think of that explain this difference. For example how the women were seen as frail and needing to be put on pedestal and taken care of, so treating a woman like a goddess would seem the gentleman thing to do, while treating a man in similar fashion would be rather insulting. And of course feminism. Much like M/f power exchange relationships is frowned upon by some as the woman pyl is automatically seen as being exploited, to worship a man as a god? That's affirming the male is the superior sex and resigning yourself to be his doormat maid!

Hmm, I also wonder if the high demand/supply ratio of dommes contributed to this 'goddess' image...

I think it's because most people are still tied in to the general populace enough to have an inkling in the back of their minds that worshiping a goddess is a romantic atavism, while worshiping a "god" is sort of bucking the system...
But what do I know?

i think that's an interesting point. I mean-- your communities are something special unto themselves, but yeah. Men who worship goddesses-- I always wonder if "Goddess" ever means "This here female type human with the bad hair days and the occasional halitosis and the menstrual cramps and the pair of shoes that broke a heel yesterday because she's actually kinda klutzy... "

I wonder if he can worship that normal people stuff, or if It all has to be transmuted to the divine realm.

I guess it has to do with what welkin said: one is seen as being "taboo" and romantic (as in romanticism, not lovey) while the other is seen as "taboo" and stupid.

I always thought it was kind of funny and cute whenever I heard dudes throwing the term around, but I was/am always reminded that it's grounded in the "men and women are totally and completely different creatures" camp, and that using the term "goddess" in reference to, say, their ideal girlfriend, they actually wanted to keep them at arm's length and make sure they stayed in that lofty place where they can go and bask in their unrelatable and unearthly femininity, etc.

Hm... probably also has to do with the way "god" and "goddess" are colloquially used and that "god" just seems to be way more impersonal and generic than "goddess" at any rate... probably due to the fact that you hear the former way more often than the latter, especially in this country. :B
