I smooshed it about a year ago. Half of it came off, the rest stayed. Then it grew back all wrong. It became impacted, painful and misshapened. Doc said it had to go. Blech.

Perhaps it's best the nail went. The hubby had a post-marathon toenail grow back wrong, and he ruins his socks after only a month.

I remember a scene from one of the Star Trek TV series. Bones, Scotty and Kirk are on some planet, Scotty has some kind of a minor injury and Bones is about to do something about it.

Nailbed fungus infections are the shits. The most effective treatment is with a laser. Not sure if that has spread outside the U.S., though. HM had hers done as part of a study. 'pears to have worked.

My father told of a story about his childhood. His father held him down while the doctor sliced the nail down the center and peeled it off his foot. Gives me chills every time I think about it.

I have to use a topical antifungal for the next few months until grows back so I don't get the infection. I must say, I'm very vain about my feet. I usually pay a great deal for pedicures and treatments. I hate the idea of having a missing nail.

Thankfully I've never had to have a nail yanked. The closest I've come was having several small holes drilled through a nail to relieve pressure when a piece of Plywood slipped through my hands and dropped edge on directly on my toe.

I drilled holes in my toenail as a kid on the farm. I dropped a wagon tongue on it and, with no health insurance, unless blood was gushing or a bone was protruding, we didn't go to the hospital. Dad handed me the bent paperclip he heated and I burned the holes in. It didn't hurt and it sure felt better after it drained a bit. Whew.

I had a bad bleed under a toe nail. I don't even remember why. The whole toe turned purple/black. I drilled my own nail using a tiny drill bit from the tool box. The relief was almost orgasmic. It was like a tooth ache that suddenly went away but produced a bit of a mess.

Along the same lines, as a kid, my parents took me to the emergency room for an extremely painful ear ache. While waiting to see a doctor, the pain suddenly went away. My parents took me home and were very annoyed about all of the drama leading to wasted hours at the hospital. Long story short, my ear drum burst and relieved the pressure. Note: in my case, it was a military hospital. I always say: if you want to know what USA government health care will be like there is no reason to guess. Visit a military hospital or Veterans Administration hospital.

A drill? Ugh! No way would I let anyone get near my toe with a drill! The paperclip didn't hurt at all. The relief was amazing. The best part? It didn't cost a thing. Smelled a little funky, though.
