Writing erotica is like desensitizing masturbation?

Three times today, I encountered the meme / theory that too much masturbation particularly with toys desensitizes you so that "normal" levels of partner stimulation no longer rock your boat.

Ignoring the literal masturbation issue for a moment, does too much erotica writing desensitize you to jolly old smut? I seem to remember getting much more worked up both writing and reading in the past. I still write love and sex scenes, but I don't get myself going anymore. I can't even tell which scenes are "hot" using my own physiological reactions as a guide. So many stories that I would have liked are now just "meh."

What are your thoughts?

If it does, there must be an upper arc in the beginning that just keeps going up and up before it zooms down. :D

I must admit I had reached a certain level of desensitization in writing Erotica, which is why I have been on hiatus writing in the genre' in favor of non-erotic stories. I imagine I'll return to the subject one day, but for now non-erotic works are on my schedule. ;)

Could it be that you are no longer a teenager, Marlow?
I'm 42. The desensitization I perceive has been in the last year or so when my erotica writing output increased from on or two stories per year to one or two per month. At 40, reading stories from literotica generally got me hot. Now writing doesn't even do it.

Sounds like you've become jaded.

I was being frivolous, Marlow. Although the essence of my point was quite serious.

The first time I enjoyed a glass of Chateau Lynch-Bages from a top vintage, I considered the possibility that I may have died and gone to heaven. And, on every (rare) occasion since that I have been able to enjoy a glass of the delightful ‘brew’, I have still found it totally enchanting. But if I had a glass of a top vintage Lynch-Bages every day with my lunch and another with my supper, I’m sure I would soon find it very nice but not very special. I don’t see why our reaction to erotica should be any different from our reactions to any of life’s other pleasures.

I don't think I get desensitized, every sex scene in my stories gets me going. Some might not do so at the time of writing because they're just so much damn hard work but they'll get me in the editing process.

They get me in the writing but by editing time I am over it, except for erotic poetry. It has to be more intense, so more arousing. I tell you one thing though, my weirdometer no has a wider normal range than it used to.:D;)

I don't trust my weirdometer anymore. It's been acting kinda weird lately. Every time I go near it the needle jumps off the scale.

Masturbation has desensitized me to masturbation, writing erotica has desensitized me to writing erotica - to some extent. I don't think I'm easily desensitized, I must be a sensitive guy.

To escape the monotony, and thats what it is, you must become a better writer. You must find improved ways to express the same ideas.

There's no better example than music. A dozen people can perform the same composition, and one will be sublime, most of them mediocre, and a few awful. Exact same score.

Too much reading or writing erotica will likely desensitize you to it, but then you can get used to, or desensitized to, just about anything. Take a break -- it'll likely feel new when you return to it.

If writing erotica isn't "getting you going" anymore treat that the same way you would if it was your real sex life getting monotonous and spice it up or change things. I used to write "straight up" erotica just hot sex scenes with normal people in normal situations, I then switched to BDSM and now incest, each time I have swapped topics it has started getting me hot and bothered again. Last week i wrote a "normal" erotic coupling type of scene the kind that had me bored six months ago but i found it excited me again because I have been writing different things. So just like in sex when you might try a new position try another category.
