Painkillers killing sensation?

Hey folks! I'm sure no one noticed, but I'm popping back after disappearing for a bit...Holidays came and I finally had my boy for a while. Between family, holidays and him I was rather distracted and I fell out of the habit of coming here by the time he left

Catch-up aside, I was wondering if anyone has had any problems with pain killers killing sensation? I had some surgery on my shoulder to fix a tear, and I seem to be having some problems getting off with my vibe since then. Has anyone else had any problems with this?

I suppose it makes sense that they'd kill sensation a bit, but this is just not working at ALL very frustrating, particularly since the vibe is about all I can maneuver atm!! ((My right arm is in a sling and i'm not particularly skilled with my left hand ))

I have some *cough* experience with narcotic pain killers.

Narcotic pain killers, also referred to as "Opiates" kill pain by literally attaching themselves to the pain receptor nerves in your brain, blocking their ability to send signals to the rest of the body, telling it that it's in pain. Unfortunately, these medications are not "smart bombs", and cannot block only certain nerves, ending up more like "carpet bombs" and blocking large numbers of nerve endings that also signal things like pressure and heat especially in the skin.

They have a variety of side effects on the body, one of the most noticeable ones is sexual difficulty of varying degrees. Difficulty reaching orgasm is one of the most common side effects when on narcotic pain killers, almost ALL patients and users suffer with this due to the nerve endings in the brain being temporarily unusable.

Unfortunately, there is no getting around the sexual side effects until the narcotic has been metabolized to the point where the opiates are not shutting down your nerves.

Some people are, with sufficient patience and time and proper stimulation, can eventually reach orgasm -sometimes-, but many people have to choose between pain relief and full sexual functioning.

So, in short, what you're experiencing is totally normal. If you REALLY want to have an orgasm, skip your dose, grit your teeth and deal with the pain, get your orgasm and then take your dose to relieve the pain.

It's always better to overinform for the curious rather than underinform and assume.

Painkillers tend to have a definite negative side effect to one's sex drive. The longer the duration, the more consistant the lack of sexual desire seems to be.
I am in a relationship where this is an issue. My significant other has had numerous back and knee problems over the past few years, leading to long term use of pain killers. I wish there was an easy cure, but the only one I have seen is to stop taking the medication, which is not always possible. Good luck. I hope all works out well for you.

I guess, yes...I guess I was assuming that others had the same knowledge of narcotics as I do (<---veterinary student). Well we know what Assuming makes me....

I just wasn't sure how extensive the effect of narcotics were on OTHER receptors than the pain receptors. I know they're not even that extensive on the "immediate pain" receptors, so I wasn't sure of their full coverage. We only discuss them in relation to pain and a few other centers like vomiting.

By the, the same goes for anti-depressants too. Most (Prozac?) of these significantly reduce sex drive, although I can get off once in a couple of days if I want.
