As well as the rise in fuel tax, our Value Added Tax has gone up from 17.5% to 20%.

It is part of the government's strategy for reducing the National Debt. I hope that it works and that we don't have the pain for no gain.

Approx. 17% of the cost of every gallon of gas is taxes in the US. With the national average (as of 1/3/11) being $3.07 that's $0.52 per gallon. Not as much as the taxes in the UK, except there are more cars in the US than the UK.

The US (in 2009) consumed 137.93 billion gallons of gas. That's $71,985,667,000 in taxes collected at the pump. $72 billion in taxes.
