the author seems to have excellent insights. what he might have mentioned is that the other side of the American food psyche is the one with the desire for Denny's 6 lb burger, and KFC's 'double down' (sandwich made of chicken, no bread).

as far as commerical interests go, he's dead on. i remember growing up in the southwest, and being forced to eat margarine, which, initially had to be sold as white! i never had butter in my first 20 years.

Most of us over here didn't either. Fortunately, the Government passed a Law to force Vitamin D into Margarine (pronunciation of this word was a hot debate in the 50s). at least Rickets was avoided in many cases.

The bad news is that it's back: Too much sun cream !
 
i take 5,000 IU vitmin D daily, AND I get into the sunlight. Even so, my blood tests show a moderate level of D.

I have to say though, that I have not felt the depressive effects of the winter as acutely year, so maybe it's working...

I used to be absolutely ghastly the week before and the week after Christmas. I don't know whether it's just making sure my morning coffee is half milk or the sun lamp one of my student teachers gave me but the last few years have been much, much better. There were years when I didn't even want to be in the same room with myself! :eek:
