But is she the US conservative standard bearer? I don't think so. Twenty pages of with Palin in the title at Lit started mostly by liberals? I can understand the frenzy when she was the VP nominee, but it hasn't stopped.

I honestly thought she'd be happy being little miss celebrity and not run in 2012 but I have come to the conclusion that she is an attention whore. I don't mean whore in an insulting way, I just don't know of a better word for it.

She'll be one of twelve or so running for president and with her name recognition and ever expanding money pockets, she's a lock to go all the way to the end and finish as high as third. But winning? I don't see it happening. I don't really see her running as a negative. It will focus more attention on the republican primaries and the press obsession will continue into the summer of 2012. Drill, baby, drill!

It shouldn't be that surprising that she is running. She is one of those people who if she is told not to do something, she's twice as likely to go ahead and do it. And without Sarah, the party just wouldn't be the same. The 2012 party, not the republican party.

Get ready to write that check. Roscoe. You should have asked for odds.

She might very well be the first Tea Party candidate in 2020. If the country is still around by then.

A pox on you, WD. That money is as good as spent! :D

Why Sarah Palin's North Korea Flub Matters.

"The real story, though, isn't that Palin said 'North' instead of 'South.' Let's be honest: Vice President Joe Biden could have just as easily blown a line like that.

No, the real story is that Palin was discussing a complex, precarious, highly dangerous issue as if she were an expert, even though she clearly isn't.

Does anyone outside of Palin's relatively small group of smitten followers honestly believe that she is competent to act as an expert on Korean policy? That she knows the intricacies and risks of engaging with the North Koreans? That she understands the possible leadership struggle going on there? Do you think she has the first clue about the history of Korea over the last century? Do you think she's ever heard of Syngman Rhee, the Bodo League massacre, the Battle of Inchon, or National Security Council Report 68, or that she knows about the decades of Japanese rule in Korea? Do you think she's ever read about the role the propaganda efforts of the post-Stalin Soviet government played in the eventual armistice that ended the fighting?

Doubtful, at best.

Now, do you doubt for a second that Joe Biden could reel off a dissertation-level analysis of these issues from the top of his head?

That's the real story about the Palin flub about North Korea that the media isn't covering. It's not that she misspoke, but that anyone cared what she had to say on the issue in the first place.

Sarah Palin, with her reliance on spouting talking points, simplistic approach to issues and complete lack of experience beyond a half term as governor of a state the size of Columbus, Ohio, is not competent to be discussing North Korea. (Columbus, Ohio's population is bigger than Alaska's, 769,360 to 698,743.)

And shame on any media outlet that treats her opinions as if they're worth anything."

I thought of that article too, JM. :) It's true that the real problem is that Palin has a simplistic answer to everything, but what gets attention and what gets people riled up are the gaffes.

As far as wagers go, I think she'll flirt with a Republican run, but ultimately run as a tea party candidate. Some of the various tea party groups will come together and nominate Palin as their national candidate. She absolutely can't resist running -- she's power-hungry and in love with herself. Of course, they all are to some degree, but Palin lacks restraint and the ability to delay gratification.

Is that what her husband says?

Fuck, she's not flirting with a run, she's running and calling on a prayer shield to protect her from the republican machine.

They'll be no tea party candidate in 2012 though. Unless Obama is impeached and removed by the senate.

By flirt, I mean she'll run, lose and then a tea party group will get together to nominate her. That's just how I see it. I don't see her as capable of getting the Republican nomination -- I think she'll fuck it up and burn out maybe halfway or something. The thing is, if she hired some big time strategists and listened to them, and really prepared, she could be a serious contender. But she picks reading emails from her prayer groups over educating herself on the issues every time.

She's a smoke screen, nothing more.

Real things are happening, but the media machine is buying the "lookee here" tactic being employed by the people who pull the strings. Meanwhile they're in the basement deciding who will be the next President.

Obama... A person nobody knew about, broke the racial barrier, a few months in the Senate - then President. Most likely not even born in this country. Most likely Muslim. And he was elected.

So sure, Palin COULD be elected - but she's just the smoke.

There won't be too many surprises as to who is running. Just look at who is pushing their book and spending time Iowa and New Hampshire. It's just a question of who in the back of the bus can move ahead of the big four which I'd say were Romney, Huck, Palin, and Newt. You have Pense, Pawlenty, Jindal, Daniels, Thune, and Barbour off the top of my head.

Can anyone beat Obama? I don't know. It will be the 2012 version of Obama and not the 2008 model. Minus about 12 democratic governorships.

It is an interesting idea, whether Palin will choose to go it alone if she doesn't get the nomination. She has a hardcore band of supporters, and could probably draw as well as Perot. The GOP needs to keep the tea party happy to keep that splinter from happening.

I laughed at Barbara Bush's comment recently about Palin: “I sat next to her once. Thought she was beautiful,” Barbara Bush said. “And she’s very happy in Alaska, and I hope she’ll stay there.”

That's the Establishment GOP/Tea Party divide.

Well, she is as proudly anti-intellectual as they come (common sense will always cure what ails ya), which is why people love her – and mistrust her.

Sounds like from that poll that it needs to be Romney/Palin in 2012. Which, of course sounds a lot like McCain/Palin in terms of internal campaign dynamics. Maybe they just need to get her an elephant suit and make her the mascot and send her around to rallies.

Long way to go. We were told it was going to be Hillary vs Giuliani in 2008. I don't think Palin has much of a shot especially if Huck runs. That will split the redneck uneducated vote. It's more of a liberal love affair with Palin anyway. Even BaBa WaWa is captivated. Rosco has rubbed his cock raw just thinking about it.

I like the Alaska show but I'll pass on Palin as Pres.

I thought we liberals were seething in fear and hate of her? :D

I actually kinda like Huck. Anyone who calls the Club for Growth "Club for Greed" can't be all bad, and his religious, socially conservative side doesn't bother me in the slightest. It's the Club/Norquist/Wrecking Crew Republicans that need to be stopped.

I see on Frum Forum that they are calling for a Romney/Huck ticket. Between their endorsement and my kinda sorta approval of Huck, I'd say he was doomed.

Romney has a few problems. He's a Mormon for one. And according to some here he was the author of ObamaCare. But he looks presidential. I mean, if he were an actor he might be cast in the role. And he has a pretty extensive resume. But he couldn't even beat a crusty old RINO like McCain. The whole Yankee/Mormon thing is a problem. I'd still put him second with Palin third. Huck behind them. That's my prediction anyway. Too early to pick a winner. Right now to use a golf term I'd bet the field and not the favorites.

Rubio is a rising star and the centerpiece of Netzech's hotness fantasy. He's a little green but the temptation of a Hispanic VP might be too great to resist.

Rubio isn't in play for at least four years. If I were a GOP strategist, I'd be thinking about how to kill two birds with one stone in 2012. Let Sarah run, that way you keep your powder dry and the fringe populist elements of the GOP take the hit when Obama wins instead of the mainstream. Then you can say to the baggers, "hey, you had your shot". [/concern troll]

That was not me in the YMCA with Romney, I assure you. ;)

The Republican field this time around looks a lot like a typical out-of-power field. You get one or two decent possibilities and the rest look like they could be auditioning for roles as the minor dwarves in a remake of Snow White. What's fascinating to me at this point is the obvious split between the so-called establishment Repubs like Norquist and Rove and the folks who want to draw their strength from the tea party crowd. Reminds me a little bit of the moderate Dems running against the anti-war Dems back in 1968 and 1972. As I recall, neither election was very pretty from a Democrat's point of view.

So is Palin McGovern or Wallace? Soo confused:confused:

Good call.

Romney just doesn't have what it takes. I don't think it's the Mormon thing - he just comes off stiff and like a total phoney.

This isn't 1966. Democrats are coming off the worse assbeating in over 70 years and learned nothing from it. Now tell me it wasn't that bad and put Nancy back in charge please.

Nancy got shit done that no Speaker had been able to do since the days of Harry Truman. Your guys may like to vilify her and may need to in order to moderate her power, but she has been a very effective legislator.

Are you pro-life?

I'm personally pro-choice, but these social issues had a lot to do with destroying the Democratic Party and paving the way for the destruction of the labor movement. I'd happily vote for a pro-life politician who shared my economic outlook.

It is a little like '68 in that we have a president sending more troops to an unwinnable war. Of course the entire free world is telegraphing to the terrorists that it will be over soon.

al-Qaeda only wears watches when they are timing a bomb blast. Time has no meaning to them otherwise. But Obama was so wrong on the surge in Iraq that is just had to work in Afghanistan.

Not that anyone covers the war anymore.
