For regular contributors it pretty uniformly takes three days for a noncontest entry to post (entries to the periodic contests usually are posted within twenty-four hours). Newer contributors get a little more scrutiny at the beginning and it can take five days for their story to post. When a contest is on (the Winter Holidays contest is on now), it can take a day or two longer than normally.

The best time to check is about 8 am EST (New York/Miami/etc. time). They're supposed to be up about midnight, but hey, it usually goes on through the night. Sometimes, stuff'll be posted after 8, but not usually.

Huhm. Something that wasn't mentioned. Everytime you click open the "pending" link, you must hit "submit" to make sure it goes to the editor's list again. Otherwise, it'll say "in preview-needs to be submitted", which keeps it out of the editor's list. If you see that in your submissions list, click the "in preview" link and press submit. Anyway, everytime you hit "pending" and then "submit", your story goes to the tail end of the editor's list and, feasibly, the editor could never actually see your story.

I would have mentioned that but on another thread someone posted that this wasn't true. Since I've never had to go through that process, I didn't know what was true then, so I didn't note it. What is the truth of the issue?

It's true. When the submit button is pressed and the submission is processed by the scripts that run the site, the submission goes to the end of the line. The scripts don't know the difference between submit and resubmit, all it knows is that submit it pressed and the submission is lined up based on day and time.

s7splat brings up a good point and I'd like to add this curiosity. Once I posted a story just to see how many lit pages it would add up to. (Eight!) And I left it there. I came back the next day and saw that it said "Preview - needs to be submitted" but it also had two views.

Things that make you go "Hmm."
