COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — An undetermined number of McDonald's employees in northeastern Ohio received handbills in their most recent paychecks suggesting they vote for three Republican candidates.

The fast food chain's corporate headquarters in Oak Brook, Ill., quickly condemned the action by the Canton franchise, saying it violated company policy. Allen Schulman, an attorney representing one of the employees, said Friday he had forwarded the paycheck insert to Canton's city law director, citing an Ohio law against corporate advocacy in elections.

"It's no surprise to anyone that Ohio is a battleground state in this election, and for a multinational corporation like McDonald's to threaten employees like this is morally and legally wrong," Schulman said in a statement.

The handbill with a simple McDonald's logo at the top recommended votes for Republicans John Kasich for governor, Rob Portman for U.S. Senate, and Jim Renacci for Ohio's 16th congressional district.

"If the right people are elected we will be able to continue with raises and benefits at or above our present levels," the insert said. "If others are elected we will not."

Shirley Rogers Reece, general manager for the company's Ohio region, said McDonald's had no knowledge that the handbill was being distributed.

"We wholeheartedly respect diverse views and opinions, and our employees' right to vote," she said in a statement. "Our position is that every employee should make his or her own choice."

Shulman told city law director Joe Martuccio the letter was "clearly designed to intimidate, threaten and coerce a captive group of employees to vote for specific candidates at the risk of their jobs, their raises, and their benefits."

He called it "particularly egregious that in this time of harsh economic conditions, a corporation would stoop to this level of voter intimidation."

The company did not release the name of the owner of the franchise that distributed the handbill. McDonald's spokesman Joe Woods could not say how many employees received it.

In her statement, Reece said that McDonald's did not endorse any of the candidates mentioned in the handbill.

"While clearly this was poor judgment, we don't believe it was intended to offend anyone," Reece said.

Kasich faces Gov. Ted Strickland in Tuesday's election. Portman is running against Lt. Gov. Lee Fisher for the open seat currently held by U.S. Sen. George Voinovich. Renacci is challenging first-term Rep. John Boccieri. Strickland, Fisher and Boccieri are all Democrats.

Just goes to show how far people are willing to go this election. I'm starting to question the sanity of people. Sure it's important but every day we see new stupidity.

Nah . . . I like my Republicans extra-crispy, and McDonald's sucks at special orders.

The new Anthem of the American people! LAW SUITS FOR EVERY OCCASION!

Yeah. The management of that McDonalds was criminally stupid, but for fuck's sake, threatening? Come on, I've had stronger words between management and us girls back stage. It was dumb of the managers but it is equally criminally stupid for employees to take what the asshat management said as a threat. Really, what's next?

I know! Next time my manager tells me my heels aren't high enough at work I'll scream that's he's threatening my income and health! Six inch heels are just that one inch too high over the five I've been dancing in. I could hurt myself in that high of heels!

McDonald's employees probably aren't the most fertile ground for pushing an anti-minimum wage agenda.

You arent working for minimum wage and have just been told that unless you vote a certain way, you won't get a raise..and they put it in writing

your manager may rant at you, but this was a legal threat..they have every right to respond

It may have violated company policy, but in view of recent SCOTUS rulings the Ohio law may be unconstitutional. Intimidation? Hardly, the company has no way of knowing how their employees vote one way or the other. If they were unionized employees their union would be handing out pre-marked sample ballots and that probably wouldn't produce a whimper from you.:)

They know if their candidate loses, the employee won't get paid..they even wrote down as much..that pressures someone to do what they can to make thier employers candidate wins even if it goes against their beliefs..hence; intimidation

as for the second part..thats just stupid

It's all because Republicans are easier and cheaper for lobbyists to buy off, therefore it won't be as costly for Mcdonald's if Republicans win.

Why is it every middle aged fat guy on the internet is either a stripper, hooker or sex addicted tramp? You could at least try some fucking subtlety. For fucks sake.

Hey I thought you once said you owned a business that made more money than I make in a lifetime. Now you have a manager?

Then again you were also the fuckturd who said if white people went to war against blacks that we'd all go running. Which you promptly shut the fuck up about when I pointed out that you'd also be up against the Mexicans... LOL.

Stupid bitch. Get bent. Preferably by Rush Limbaugh.

because my politics are left wing? and how is this negative toward white people?

you seriously cant be this fucking stupid

I recall from high-school U.S. history, in 1896, when the Republican William McKinley faced the Democrat (and free-silver fanatic) William Jennings Bryan, factory owners were telling their workers that if Bryan won, they need not bother showing up for work the next day.

It's a venerable American tradition.
